Sailing the globe in detail...
Great read. Well thought out storyline and excellent character development. However, be advised that this novel is all about sailing and you will have a rather sharp learning curve if you are not up to par on nautical terminology, especially that dealing with a sailboat. There's plenty of suspense to keep you busy and turning pages. Also, there are excellent educational experiences included regarding geography, especially areas in the Persian Gulf region, and the politics of the high seas. This novel is a mind-bending journey that will entertain and strain you, rest assured. Happy reading to you.

Great book
This is one of my all-time favorite books. I bought this copy of it so I could destroy it by cutting the binding off with my jigsaw, scanning the loose pages, and converting it to an eBook so I could read it (re-read it, actually, for about the 10th time) on my Kindle. On the small chance that anybody cares, here is the procedure:1) Remove binding2) Scan the loose pages. (Fujitsu fi-6130 scanner, 60 pages per minute)3) Save as PDF file.4) Use OCR program (ABBY PDF Transformer) to convert to RTF file.5) Proof and correct RTF file in MS-Word. (optional)6) Use Calibre to convert RTF file to *.mobi and send to Kindle. If you skip step 5, the whole procedure, including using the jigsaw to cut off the binding, can be done in about 15 minutes. Yeah, I know, I'm weird. But I prefer reading on the Kindle to reading on paper.

I swear
the author, Justin Scott was there on board the protagonist's boats, carefully documenting everything. As far as nautical expertise goes, Scott comes across a lifelong mariner: his details about boat motion, sea state, and the effect of wind and current on the surface of the ocean is spot on. Lots of twists and turns and well developed characters. The plot is set in an era before AIS, and GPS ... and I kept trying to make the plot work with today's technology ... but this in no way took anything away from the immense enjoyment of this read. My aunt gave me this book 25 years ago and this re-read was just as fulfilling as the original.

A great novel delivered in a timely fashion at a good price
With my library taking all sorts of Covid precautions, I find myself rummaging through boxes of old books to see if things I read 30 or 40 years ago still hold up. That effort caused me to think of this novel and acquire another copy to replace the one that has apparently gone walkabout over the past many years. It's the story of a couple sailing across the Atlantic whose ship is crushed by an oil supertanker that doesn't even feel the impact, and the plot essentially deals with the man's effort to take revenge on the tanker and its arrogant captain. Kind of like a Moby Dick obsession thing but with a giant ship instead of a whale.) Enjoyed the book the second time around and am totally happy with the buying experience.

Tech manual versus adventure/love story
I can see why it was a very popular read back during its original release. And yes, I agree that it is a good story. However, my criticism lies mostly with the ending. It is clearly stated in the original reviews that the technical aspects of sailing noted in the author's writing is indeed extreme. Of this, I have no real issues (though I know zilch regarding sailing). It is just that the story's ending feels incredibly rushed and amateurish, as if the author felt that he was "running" out of book space and needed to finish up things. Seems to me that by reducing some (just a little) of the massive sailing technical details, the author might have had the time, patience and desire to give us a better ending then what was presented. As for his new love interest, once again I believe less technical and more personal detail might have given more credibility (not to mention clarity) regarding the protagonist's leaving his lost wife behind and starting up his new life.

High Adventure on the High Seas...
After enjoying "The Wrecker" by Justin Scott, I checked to see what else he had written. "The Shipkiller" is a 30 year earlier work and held special interest to me as a sailor. The book is long out of print, but I was able to obtain a used hardbound copy in decent condition at Amazon. The nautical action sequences are first rate, but the premise is a bit of a stretch for me at times. Peter Hardin is hellbent on revenge to the point of being crazy and yet manages to get several near strangers (e.g. Ajaratu Akanke, Culling, Miles Donner) to support his cause. And the incident in the Indian Ocean doldrums was very cliché. Anyway, it's fiction, so I accepted these shortcomings so as not to get in the way of enjoying an otherwise good book.

A great novel. And especially a great summer read
Justin Scott's storytelling lets you feel the sun on your face and the ocean waves wetting your body. It's adventure, thrills, danger, suspense and tragedy on a splendid sailing craft. Then you are breathing heavy in a tale of revenge.Shake loose from your weekly chores this summer and spend time with this fine book and: WIND, 1992 (on dvd) Matthew Modine and Jennifer GreyDead Calm, 1989 (on dvd) Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill

i had read this book a long time ago and was impressed by it. I felt like I was there with him. When I saw it for sale I grabbed it because I had lost my other one and would like to read it again someday.
