Solid, entertaining and bluesy hard rock
I am a bit late to the game in terms of the band Rival Sons who hail from California and formed back in 2009. Their 2018 studio release "Feral Roots" is their first release for Atlantic Records after being on Earache for their last studio efforts. It is also the first album I have ever heard from the band.If you like classic 70's hard rock in the vein of Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones and Deep Purple, then you will probably like Rival Sons. While they don't do anything truly original, they do what they do very well with interesting songwriting, tight musicianship and expressive vocals. My only complaint with their release "Rival Sons" is that many of the songs are in more of a slower to mid tempo and as a result the album as a whole never really seem to take off and soar like it could. As of the writing of this review I have yet to hear their prior releases so I do not know if this is a normal stylistic approach for the band or specific to this release. If they had picked up the pace a bit more here and there throughout the album, that would have elevated my review from a solid 4 stars to a perfect 5.What is contained on "Feral Roots" was enjoyable to listen to regardless and I look forward to exploring the rest of their back catalog as they are a fun and talented rock band.

The Best "Roots Rock" I've Heard in Decades
As they say, I’m late to the party heaping praise on this band and this disc but that’s really the fault of the major record labels (radio too). I bought this because the band was recommended by Alter Bridge’s Mark Tremonti and Myles Kennedy; they recommended California Breed also. This is exactly the kind of “roots rock” we’ve been missing since at least the demise of grunge and maybe even the 70s. Nothing on this record isn’t outstanding, but the haunting mesmerizing vocals stand out for me.Comparisons to Allman Brothers, Humble Pie, Zep. 70s blues-rock are perfectly appropriate, but it doesn’t sound dated. They really aren’t derivative. The band and the disc are both thunderous and subtle; something few can lay claim to.Please trust me, you’ll be transformed, hypnotized while immersing yourself in this disc. I would give Feral Roots more than 5 stars if I could. Led Zeppelin fans rush out to buy this today!

A MAJOR TRIUMPH!
It's about time that one of if not the best hopes America has in its ranks to save real Rock Music get their Major Label debut and they hit it out of the park. Its been a sad state in the world of American major label recording company's for way to long. It seems that all they have been interested in promoting are girl group/boy band auto-tune computerized pop singers or some cookie cutter plastic lame unimaginative rock for the last 20 years. When bands like Rival Sons have been hard at work touring writing and putting out great Rock N' Roll for indie record companies right under the major's noses building a killer catalog 5 albums deep before getting the deal. So for those of you who have been following the band for awhile don't worry the major label didn't ruin the band. They've stuck to their guns and only gotten better and for those of you who are new to the band..Welcome🤘

Heard on Mayans MC TV Show
I had never heard of this group before but one of their songs was on an episode of Mayans MC which is the spin-off show of Sons of Anarchy. I enjoyed the particular song so I thought I would try out the entire CD I found four other songs that I enjoyed. I would suggest you sample their YouTube channel at you like their music the CD might be good for you.

One of their best CDs yet!
This CD from Rival Sons has a little of everything. I love every song except one! Rival Sons is a very versatile band, with a sound the is equally unique and versatile. These are first rate musicians, all of them, who work very hard together and create tight, well arranged music. Their music is blisteringly hot and right on point, taking aim at world issues that are universally and timelessly relevant. Incredible song writing and delivery, this CD will be one of your favorites by the Rival Sons!

Great album
I discovered this band by watching Sea of Tranquility on You Tube. If you enjoy hard rock from the 70s but want something new, give this a try. From start to finish it is a phenomenal album.

Masterpiece , Magnum Opus, Tour de Force, Piece de Resistance
Yeah you get the picture , Rival Sons have always been high on quality, this however is on another level. An album that goes straight for the knockout from the very first note and doesn't let up until it's over. Waste of time in trying to single out high points, there are no weak tracks, in fact nothing approaching anything less than magnificent.Album of the year in January, yip., tick. Possibly album of the decade. I 've listened to it over and over again and each time a different track seems to stand out. I have it up there with Southern Harmony, Exile , Ok Computer.......just simply one of those albums that raises the bar. Congratulations Rival Sons, I hope this album brings you the success you deserve.

All killer ! No filler !!
If you have been with Rival Sons since 'Pressure & Time' or even earlier this album will simply reinforce the opinion that The Sons are currently the best rock band on the planet right now!!Every track here is a killer. Whether it be the riff-tastic stuff you love (Do Your Worst, Sugar On The Bone) or the more complex (Feral Roots, Look Away). There is nothing here that might be called a 'filler' track. On Back In The Woods, drummer Mike Miley gives the most solid, heavy as hell, groove filled drum performance since Bonham joined the great gig in the sky! Superb!Jay Buchanan's vocals are simply astounding throughout. Rough, mean, soulful, tender. The guy has it all. If you are a Sons fan you will know exactly what I mean. Is there a better rock vocalist around at the moment?Album closer Shooting Stars is destined to become an absolute classic! The nearest analogy would be Queen's We Will Rock You for a crowd pleasing, hook filled anthem!! This is a gospel tinged, catchy as hell mid tempo number that I would guarantee you will be singing along to by the second chorus! If the move to new label Atlantic was about anything it was perhaps about creating a real buzz around this album and maybe even getting a 'hit' - shock, horror. If there is any justice, Feral Roots should be the album that finally breaks Rival Sons into the major league of rock stardom!

Very average
I had high hopes for this album. Rival Sons have produced 3 top quality albums (nos 2,3 and 4), although there last album was short of inspiration and short in time as well. It also included a filler that was available on an earlier release. Anyway, new recording contract and early trailed songs sounded good. Now listened to it 5 or 6 times and nothing stands out. The rocking numbers are ok to goodish but not classics, and some of the other songs are mediocre and sound like earlier tunes with different lyrics. I found it all very disappointing.

Rival Sons at their very best
Having received this just days before their recent UK tour I was somewhat anxious. Much as I love Rival Sons there is a chance that the new songs won't sink in on time, or god forbid it just might not be good enough this time around. Ridiculous fears really, and well and truly proven to be so on first listen. Relief became joy as during subsequent listens I discovered that each and every song had at least a little something to love about it. The performances on tour highlighted just how good this collection of tunes really are, elevating the best to even better and the whole collection to simply fantastic. Because I listen to so much other music I've had a few days break from it here and there, but I am still finding myself wanting to stick it on for another listen. Then at the weekend with my brother visiting it gave me great pleasure to share it with him and see his enjoyment of a band he knows little about. There is an extremely good chance that this album, despite being released so early on in the year, will remain the album of the year. Absolutely superb.

Good album Great singer.
I would give 4.5 if possible but it's nearer 5 than 4. Better than the last album but not a big 5 like Great Western Valkyrie. A wonderful singer who gives it his all on every song and who makes this band special. They are a fantastic band who produce a heavy rock/blues sound and this time with heavier drumming it all works well. We saw them in Manchester at a pact Acadamy and they were superb. I would say that a song or 2 without the fuzzy guitar playing would be interesting as it can be a little OTT but overall a great band.
