Question 1

Does zone 2 support digital input as well as analog?  I ask because my current Onkyo receiver does not support digital input for zone 2.

Hello Las Vegas; the TX-NR 636 will only support analog audio connections for ZONE 2 broadcasting; along with USB, NET, AM/FM radio, and Bluetooth support for ZONE 2 playback. Does the TX-NR636 support Apple AirPlay?

Currently (May 2014) the Onkyos don't do Airplay natively in the receiver. Maybe it will be fixed with a firmware update? This is a bizarre "un-feature", since just about every other AV 2013/2014 receiver in the market at these prices does have AirPlay. After some googling... There is an accessory called the Onkyo DS-A5, that will "add" AirPlay to this receiver, but it is an absolutely pointless device, and is now no longer sold. It is a RRP $199 unit that has Ethernet and WiFi (for AirPlay) and an old iPod port (not Lightning). Output is via digital Toslink and analogue - no special dock to the receiver. If you want AirPlay and want an Onkyo, get the AppleTV. It's under $100 and does video as well as audio. And Netflix and lots of other things besides.

How is the heat?  Does the unit get pretty hot as compared to previous models of Onkyo AVR's?

Our receivers do tend to run about 80 degrees above ambient room temperature, this is normal.  If you install the apparatus in a built-in installation, such as a bookcase or rack, ensure that there is adequate ventilation.  Leave 20 cm (8") of free space at the top and sides and 10 cm (4") at the rear.  The rear edge of the shelf or board above the apparatus shall be set 10 cm (4") away from the rear panel or wall, creating a flue-like gap for warm air to escape.  Please make sure that when you turn off the main receiver that you also turn off the Zone 2 because if you don't turn off Zone2 (if your receiver has this feature) then the receiver will continue to run and will produce heat. Hay thanks the help, what wall sould I mount my dolby atmos speakers on front or back? thanks

Better follow the setting recommended by Dolby and Onkyo. Because Onkyo 636 only can support up to 5.2.2 Atmos or 7.2 for legacy setup. The best location you can try, first move 2  surround back speakers to ceiling in the middle, , second , ceiling front , ceiling back.  If you cannot mount on the ceiling, you can Atmos enabled upfiring speakers to echo off from your ceiling which is compromised plan.
