What a GREAT read!
Not perfect, mind you, but really what the young ones should be given. There are issues here that SHOULD be shared between parents and children. Children should be told, that not all adults grew up right, and not all they do is right. We should discuss these issues with them. This book does exactly that. We see the future world, where things are ran for the biggest profit of a few unscrupulous individuals. The young heroes of the book are informed that some rules about getting food are wrong. That forbidding people growing their own, is having devastating effects. Smart, loving heroes, gently guided by an elderly woman, who wants to pass her knowledge on, learn about the ways to grow food from plants. For that learning they face cruel consequences. Two of them have their mother arrested and have to run. They willingly take upon themselves the burden of making things right. They are good role models. The book introduces a priceless commodity in children's literature, THINKING.I would strongly advise to use this book, to make reading it into a strong lesson about our world, about mistakes that people make and the consequences of those mistakes. This story allows a parent to show their children, how it will be their job to do everything right, so we don't face the future like the one in this book.I would suggest to read it together. There are things here, that parents should discuss and explain to their children. I dislike the fact, that everything the kids did, was kept secret from their mom. And use of religion and the teachings from the bible, to make children disobey is very, very dangerous. That's why I would encourage to use it as guided reading. Other than this small bump, I see this book as a very good suggestion for your kid's To Be Read pile.

An Educational Story about Nutrition and Healthy Foods
Treasure is a wonderful educational story of learning about healthy food and where they came from. In a distant future, Claire and Dante have lived on processed foods labeled as carbs, protein, sweet, and snack. There are no such things as real foods to the disadvantaged and poor. Every food products are man-made and regulated by the government and corporations. Growing fruits and vegetables are illegal. When Claire and Dante are tutored by an old woman, Ana, they learned about real food such as tomatoes, carrots, peaches, and so many produces. They even learned to grow them. When their mother is arrested by the police on the discovery of the plants, Claire and Dante fled to the "Garden State" (New Jersey) with the help of the underground known as "Seed Saver".The narrator, Julia Farmer does a wonderful job for the children's voices. The listeners are able to make a distinction between the children and adult's voices. I hope the original narrator continues for the rest of the Seed Saver series. This story is educational and a perfect tool to teach young children the value of nutrition of healthy eating.I was given this audiobook by the author and I have volunteered to write an honest review. I was not compensated or influenced in any way for writing this review.

These books inspired me.
These books are awesome. When Lily, Clare & Dante find out that their food comes from plants and not just packages, and that there is a rebellion to save fresh food called the seed savers, the kids go on adventures to other places where they can grow food legally. Along the way, they meet new friends, cross paths with spies, and much much more.I can relate to these stories. When Lily’s love interest knows his way around nature, he clearly has a internal compass. That made me realize that everyone has one, you just have to train it. I love nature, & fresh food means so so much to me.The story is kind of scary because kids might not know where their food comes from in the future. It is very possible that this will happen. It will most likely happen, since in some ways it is already happening. That is so scary, but that S.Smith realized this & wrote an entire book series about it inspired me to try to make a change by growing my own fresh food. And it can for you too.I suggest these books to kids who are just starting to read more chapter books to people in the late 60s or 70s for most interest, and also for school teachers & students because these books are very educational. They are great for people who care about the planet, friends and fresh food and like exciting adventure stories.

Nice story, liked the subtle reference to faith
This story is about a fictional future where natural food and gardening is out lawed. People eat exclusively processed food squares. Possessing seeds or a garden is against the law for which you can end up in jail. An underground network of mostly old people is keeping seeds and gardening skills alive. This story is about an elderly woman passing on the secrets of seeds, gardening, and fresh foods to a new generation (kids). The kids end up on the run; it is very exciting. I (librarian) plan to read it to my students this fall. I hope the students will read the other books in the series. The children do say prayers when they are in danger. The faith references are subtle and seem natural to me as people who have very little faith often turn to prayer when they are scared.I liked the book, maybe a side effect will get kids to try fresh food!

Underrated
My family is loving this series (we’re almost on the last book). It is clean yet compelling. As the series unfolds, the author very impressively envisions a possible future with respect to our food supply. This first book is a bit slow, but pleasant and still very readable. Subsequent books have more depth and action than one would initially anticipate.

Everyone should read this book
This is a Middle Grade SciFi book about gardening. Actually it is about escape from totalitarian regimes and a return to fresh food and freedom of choice to grow it, but on the surface it is just about 12 year old Clare, her seven year old brother Dante and their friends Lily (same age as Clare) and Ana, who is substantially older - kind of my age. Their adventure is about growing food - in secret.Seed Savers is what I believe in. In S Smith's world, food choice has long gone, since the corporate agribusinesses managed to hoodwink governments into belief in factory farming on a national scale, using genetically modifed crops. Furthermore it has prohibited the preservation of biodiversity and natural selection in food plants that keeps us with robust strains likely to adapt to climate change and weather patterns, pests and diseases, and, most importantly, enable people to save their seeds year after year to provide for the future. Ana, a volunteer at the after-school club at the church, is dedicated to passing her seed-saving knowledge on to the next generation. and resorts to using passages from the Bible as a good method of teaching people that have never heard of fruit or vegetables, since all their food comes in blocks of goodness (hmmph) from Stores. The Bible has many references to stewardship of the land and saving seeds, and God providing the fruits for people to use (the Koran seems to be good on Allah providing fruits, too) and religion, or at least church attendance, is still encouraged in this world.S Smith outlines these societal changes as we meet the people who rebel, still, against the consequences of these disastrous government actions. She writes it in an engaging and gripping style. I made myself put the book down a third of the way through, to take a breather, since I was scared of what was going to happen. Then I couldn't wait to pick it up again, and I finished it in one sitting. In Clare and Dante we have beautifully crafted characters, and Dante just keeps pulling out surprises as he has wisdom beyond his years - or maybe he just gains it through their journey. It's a story in three parts - Clare, Dante and Lily discovering about plants through Ana's covert teaching; the escape into another grim society, and the journey to another, freer place. I was hooked into all three parts. It's a lovely story with lots of bright ideas from the kids and twists and turns in the adventure.Everyone should read this book. Especially if they aren't sure how the food in their stores comes to be there. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.
