A: About 51/2"

**Q: Is this bench made of pine or a hard wood?**
A: The bench is made of pine. Some hidden parts of the drawers seem to be made of MDF.

**Q: how thick is the top?**
A: Sorry I can't remember. The item was broken when we received it and we didn't get another one. We've had issues with Amazon on large items. Several have been broken.

**Q: measure you post is confusing**
A: Nothing confusing about it. I would never recommend it.
