The smell was very strong and unpleasant. **Q: whats the difference between this and the brushes i buy at my hardware/art store?** A: These are intended for use in cooking, so they may not be as sturdy as the ones at the hardware store, and they are also less expensive than the ones you'd probably buy in a hardware store. I use these constantly and they have help up well to being washed. I hand wash mine and lay them on their side to dry- so that the water doesn't get in deeper than it needs to go. I also used the suggestion on the package to store them in a cup filled with coarse salt. I think this is helping them stay drier because they have already out lived my last set. At only a few dollars for the set, you get exactly what you would expect for quality, but they are able to do just what you need them to.We had some issues with shedding hairs and a little bit of rust around the bracket that holds the hairs to the handle. After the first few uses and washes a majority of the loose hairs are gone and you no longer have to worry about picking bits out of your food as you make it. I recommend to hand wash them to prevent rusting, or just throw them in the dish washer with no second thought due to the low price.The bristles are stiff enough to make application perfect with enough give that you don't end up scraping everything off.
