ToneDexter, from Audio Sprockets, is an amazing new pro preamp for acoustic guitar, violin, upright bass, mandolin and more, that restores the missing body sound to an instrument’s piezo pickup. ToneDexter stores WaveMaps of your studio mic sound that you can recall when using just your pickup. The WaveMaps transform the pickup signal so that it sounds like a mic—lush, resonant, and natural. You can store WaveMaps of different mic positions and different mics, for each of your instruments.

Expensive for not supporting IRs
I got this for my electric cello to use an impulse from an acoustic, just like they show with the Yamaha Silent Guitar on the website. Except I couldn't load my 3SigmaAudio french cello impulses into the ToneDexter. I made an IR with my acoustic cello, and tried that with the electric, and it was ok, but not as good as putting the 3rd party in an IR loader in my computer when recording. Preamp is nice to have, shame that the mic input can't be used live, otherwise it would win on that functionality, but for my purposes, I spent almost the same money and got a Line6 Helix Effects box that can load my custom IRs (including ones I can make of my own acoustic instruments), plus FX loops with switches, similar size form factor, better tuner (and bonus, it has a bunch of FX because that's what it's for).Nevermind the "multi-fx" nature of the HXFX, it does the ToneDexter thing pretty darn good too. Maybe for acoustic guitarists it's an easy way to make a new IR every gig that matches the mic you're using on stage at that venue? But otherwise, you'd do it ahead of time with a computer anyway.Build quality is good, sound quality is fine. Made in the USA (texas?) which is nice, and I like that it's red! These all make it not-terrible, but for the money (and limited availability), I'd go a different route. That said, if one was gifted to me, I would use it all the time, no doubt. Just doesn't compete well at the moment.

Yup. I’m impressed.
The end result is not exactly the same as a microphone sound, but it’s pretty close. Much better than the Fishman aura preamp/DI. And, this unit allows you to store different mic positions. You really do need to experiment with this to get it sounding right: not only with different Mic positions but also with the different settings on the unit. What sounds great in headphones may not be the best setting for a given amp in a given room. That said, I’d recommend this unit as the closest yet to mic’d sound.

If you like the way your acoustic guitar sounds when plugged in then don't bother to read this
I happen to like the sound of an acoustic guitar. And if it needs to be amplified, it should be with the use of a carefully placed good mic. However, that is not always practical. On stage, it is a problem. So everybody plugs in. But, really, don't you hear how unnatural those piezo pickups sound compared with a mic'd guitar? Enter: the ToneDexter. It lets you get the next best thing to a mic'd guitar while plugging in. Simply put, it is awesome!

Best Tone from a UST possible
I was able to play my guitar equipped with a UST through a mic and also directly into the ToneDexter. It learned and mapped the correct tone within 2 minutes and now my guitar sounds just like it's mic'd when played through the ToneDexter. I love this thing! If you like acoustic sound, you will love the ToneDexter!

Makes amplified acoustic guitar sound like the unamplified guitar
I struggled through three acoustic guitar pickups and two preamps and two amps trying to achieve amplified sound that sounded like my guitar. Finally, I invested in a Tonedexter and voila, it happened. I used a mic and my guitar to train the Tonedexter to produce a sound that sounds like my guitar amplified through a microphone. It is expensive, but it works...and I would have saved $, if I jumped to this solution sooner.

Great product!
This is the best way to get an acoustic sound amplified, it works with any instrument including banjos which I had thought were impossible to get to sound good plugged in.

Sets a new standard for live acoustic instruments.
The best product ever invented for acoustic guitar. I’ve been waiting for this since 1977. Worth every penny and beyond.

Not User Friendly !
Am using Tone Dexters in a multiple concert setting with multiple and very different acoustic instruments, and have had several issues with the unit. The User Interface is highly problematic. All the knobs look exactly alike and it's very easy to turn the wrong one -especially the input and output knobs during performance, and lose your carefully set levels. There are no display numbers for these crucial settings ! Also, no way to name your WaveMaps. A translation list is needed along with your song list, lyric sheets, etc.No repeatable settings at all unless you turn a knob to activate the number display. Try this while playing onstage... Very klunky. There is NO other way to change settings either-no MIDI, no well laid out footpedal-no way to link 2 units. It would be a massive improvement to be able to store output volume and input gain per patch (WaveMap) to accommodate the very different pickups in the very different instruments that are assigned per individual WaveMap.The backup scheme is convoluted, time consuming, requires a computer, confusing, and prone to mistakes.. It requires 2 different Operating Systems, special folders, and multiple reloading. Just daftThe quality of your "Wavemaps" is totally dependent on the quality of the mic you use for the "training" process. Not to forget that it simply does not work for a number of different acoustic pickup systems .A lot of hassle and lack of important performance features for an expensive unit. The Fishman Aura is a much better "specialty pre-amp" , especially for live stage use.
