Great series of books
Great series of books. I like the digest size. It's different to read for comics. I found a really good deal for the rest of the series and had to star it from the volume 1/book 1 first to get started right. Recommended to X-men fans of course. Do not need a lot of previous knowledge to enjoy.

Bad copy
Great stories and art but this version is terrible. This is a pocket version of poor quality. The pages in the book I received were separated from the spine. It should not have been sold.

4 stars for xmen, 1 star for spine glue
Picked up all 8 books at a comic shop in the bargain bin, all brand new. i give it 4 stars b/c it's xmen and to me, even a bad xmen book is still an xmen book. i'm not a comic snob to pick apart the story or artwork but it's a cool story line in my opinion b/c it has a smaller group of core xmen and it involves the mutant school a good deal. my only negative is that, even while brand new, the spine glue came apart and some pages got loose from the stitching. Not sure if anyone else has had the same happen to theirs. i would just be careful and not open the book fully flat. the smaller size is great for one handed reading and they're small enough to carry around. each book has about 4 issues worth of content.

Miniaturized.. but It's Kind of Cute.
I've always heard good things about Grant Morrison's New X-MEN series, and when I saw that Marvel was re-releasing the trades, I knew it was time to finally read it for myself. The story is a a bit out-there and epic. Morrison does excellent characterization and shows surprsing focus. I don't read a lot of super-hero comics, but this is definitely a worthy exception. I loved it. The artwork was amazing, the colors pop off the pages. It's gorgeous.Volume 1. collects issues #114-117, two of which are penciled by Frank Quietly. The other two issues are penciled by Ethan Van Sciver and Leinil Francis Yu. They're all great talents, but I prefer Quietly's style the most. He fits Morrison's take on the X-Men like a latex-glove. Despite my preference, the artwork is splendid throughout. The story takes place in the middle of x-men continuity, but doesn't ever leave new readers in the dark with 'inside' jokes or too many references too past events. (You don't need wikipedia) It begins with an incredibly tragic blow to the mutant population. To make matters worse.. or maybe better in the long run, Charles Xavier shocks the world and the mutant community in one single moment.New villains are introduced, and old ones are back in new ways. Morrison throws more genius ideas at you and executes them with more creative prowess in just four issues than most writers do in an entire series. I can't wait to see what happens next.Although these trades are smaller than I'm used to, I don't think it is anything to gripe about. The dimensions are: 5.8 x 0.5 x 9 inches. If that's a deal-breaker for you, I should mention the very durable, non-glassy matte paper that shows off the coloring beautifully. Buy it!!

Good story bad product
Purchased used and nothing in the condition notes said anything that lead me to believe when I opened it the pages would begin falling out.

Average, at Best, Comics Collection
Grant Morrison is one of the leading comics writers of this era but this volume of his “New X-Men” comics simply isn’t up to what readers usually expect of his work. Part of that may come from relying on a host of art teams in this book. But part of that comes from the plot. Morrison makes some major changes in the X-Men saga. These include shuffling the team’s mentor off the stage (again), bringing in an old foe on the team and killing 16 million people in a handful of pages without even fleshing out the human side of that disaster. The disintegration of the marriage of two of the X-Men gets more attention than 16 million people killed in an attack. That kind of genocide can be many things in a fictional story; it should never be trivialized the way it is here. Add in some menacing but not particularly interesting foes and this book is average at best. That’s not exactly what readers expect from Grant Morrison. One caveat. As another reviewer noted, this version of the book had awful production value with pages coming out of the spine very easily.

Not Your Father's Superheroes
I didn't get a version that I was expecting. I was smaller, with really poor binding. Consequently, pages were falling out which is a shame because the content is fabulous. Morrison's writing, is complemented by Quietly's art; both have a reflective quality to them. There are those who do not like this run, saying that these aren't superhero comics. I don't agree: they aren't Lee and Kirby, but there is plenty of room for something of this quality.

I feel ripped off!
I ordered three trade paperbacks together. You can see from the photo my surprise at finding this X-Men book is a format somewhere between 'pocket' and what I'd consider 'regular' sized. For £10.99 it's a joke! The paper quality itself is nothing special. I'm returning this and seeing if I can pick up the original collection of Grant Morrison's run. One to be avoided!!!

Alright story, poor quality book
Pretty good story wise, throws you in the deep end with some major established story lines for the first book in this series, so not a great first x-men read. I still found it enjoyable, but the real problem I had with it was the quality of the book itself, the binding pretty much fell apart and have pages falling out after a single light read.
