Faster progress, more enthusiasm
I like the cheerful illustrations. They make the 23 notes on the grand staff seem less intimidating for young students. The memory aids are good too. I especially like "Elephants Got Big Dirty Feet" and "Great Big Dogs Fight Animals". These mnemonics engage children, while helping them learn the notes on the grand staff. After a few pages, the mnemonics are phased out, and the students learn to recognize the notes without them.Besides that, students benefit by drawing lines from the staff notes to the keyboard. They also discover patterns in the way notes are written and named on the grand staff. And they learn about time signatures and musical vocabulary too. That's all in this Level 1B workbook.Overall, this workbook improves students' music reading skill so they can learn new tunes more rapidly. With faster progress, they feel more enthusiastic.

1B is mainly note identification, wish there were more theory pages. Theory pages are great.
So this is a review specifically on the 1B Workbook, and I would note up front that some people would give this a 5 star. I end up leaning to 3 star because most of the book is actually note identification, specifically note identification using an mnemonic acronym (F-A-C-E and A-C-E-G etc.). In fact, 22 out of 37 pages are pure note identification across the two staffs (not ledger). My son isn't learning mnemonic-based note identification. He's eight years old and would never go through or try very hard on the types of pages included in Workbook 1B. Instead, my son is going through a program that thoroughly (albeit very slowly) teaches note learning so that when he sees a note he just knows it (similar to how we know the alphabet) and he doesn't have to "figure it out" using an acronym. In effect, most of the 1B workbook wasn't useful to us. I think this particular workbook should label itself "Note Identification & Music Theory."The pages that did have music theory were great. Also, the 1C book is almost all music theory and is wonderful.

It helps students read music better.
Here's what students get:* Lots of practice drawing lines from the staff notes to the keyboard. This helps my students associate each note on the grand staff with the corresponding key on the piano.* Catchy phrases to help students recognize the notes on the staff. "All Cows Eat Grass", for example. Introduced in the first half of the book, these temporary memory aids are mostly absent from the second half of the book, so students end up reading the notes at sight.* Funny cartoons. They hold young students' attention and help them remember the concepts. This workbook is filled with lessons and exercises on note writing, note naming, time signatures, and Italian terms. Essentially, it helps students read music better.

Students love it
As a private piano teacher for many years I have always included theory into their lessons. Doctor Mozart is amazing and keeps the interest of beginning and intermediate students. My students love it and always complete the assignments. In fact they like it so much they always complete more then assigned. The educational value is superior.Thank you, Private Music TeacherGlendale, AZ.
