Not a good map - look elsewhere
Maybe I'm spoiled after hiking with California's Tom Harrison maps for a few years. But this one just doesn't cut it.Pros:-It exists - there don't seem to be many hard-copy trail maps of this area, and no others on Amazon-It's waterproof (though I haven't tested that yet)-It's a step up from a USGS quad map if you want to hike, highlighting trails, campgrounds, no campfire zones, and the likeCons:-It doesn't have trail mileage - a notable flaw in any trail map-Its 40' contour interval is very tight, making it hard to assess elevations without a magnifying glass-The color scheme makes it even harder to assess elevations, with contour lines blending in to the green color used for forests-It's just ugly - the colors are basic and blech, fonts are mostly unattractive, and there's no shading. Some trail maps I would be happy to put on a wall or spend time exploring their fine details (see Tom Harrison maps). This is one I will only break out when I absolutely need to figure out where I'm going (and then estimate mileage myself and hope I can read the elevation).Pro/Con: The map has a lot of information in the margins, including wilderness regulations, leave no trace, and wilderness safety. It may be useful to some, but I'd personally rather have that information someplace else and make the map 20% smaller.Adventure Maps Inc. may have a better map of the area. Or try printing out a topo and keeping it in a ziploc.

It’s a map…It’s fine.
It is a good map. Nothing special but I am back home and not lost.

I'd really give it a 3.5 because I wish this map had mileage listed on the trails. It's published as a "hiking" map - and I'm at a loss as to how they could fail to include this information or even release a revised version with this information.

Great map! Awesome topography and accuracy
Great map! Awesome topography and accuracy.Because I don't carry a GPS, I often found myself wishing that the mileages were more specific to smaller portions of trail (i.e. that the marked waypoints were closer together) as it was difficult to judge mileages through certain areas of the Sawtooths using this map.Still very worth the buy!

Easy to read with colored landmarks and trails 3
Pros:1. Accurate and detailed2. Easy to read with colored landmarks and trails3. Durable: waterproof, tear-proof4. Includes good info on Sawtooth Forest Services (e.g. Ranger station phone #, permit info, wildlife)5. Current: map is updated regularly, so don't be discouraged by the 2007 copyright date that amazon listsCons:1. Big (space could easily have been saved or the map enlarged if they had not included a section on basic survival skills, which any serious backpacker should already know)2. *Relatively* heavy, about 6 oz.

recommended
This is a large map with plenty of detail. I really like the lake elevations and clearly marked trails. The only improvement I would suggest would be to add distances on the trails so I could figure out exactly how far I would be hiking on any given stretch.

We are planning a trip to hike in Idaho this fall. The coating on the map is much appreciated. We can put it in an outside pocket of our pack without worry. We will see how well it works for us when we actually get there.

I have hiked the sawtooth mountains for over 40 years this is by far the best map made for them. It helped me one time when I was lost, find my way back to the trail.
