Cast Long Shadows: Ghosts of the Shadow Market, Book 2

Too many children. Who do you belong to? I’m so confused! That is honestly my biggest qualm about this series of novellas. I don't feel that I know any of the characters well enough yet to know their unique personalities and tell them apart. Right now, I always have to stop and think which child belongs to which parents - and it draws me out of the story. This story casts the shining Matthew Fairchild in a new light, which explains the dark spot on his soul that may slowly consume him - but yet, I didn't feel the emotional weight of the story. Yes, it's terrible. But for some reason, I just didn't have the emotional connection to it and I suspect that's because of my biggest issue with these novellas - I just don't know the characters well enough yet to have a stake in their daily lives and wellbeing.

So I’m a big fan of Cassandra Clare and her Shadowhunter world, I am! But all these stories from the next generation of Will/Tess & gang from TIF trilogy, I just can’t! They all had a LOT of kids, which is great! But I just don’t know that well, right now I’m still invested in Julian & Emma!! LOL! I guess once I start this new trilogy, I’ll go back read them again! Real sad events for Matthew though!

Set between 1899-1901, this story focuses on Matthew Fairchild, son of Henry and Charlotte. He's a swaggering teen with loads of charisma but after learning a terrible rumor he goes with it and makes a huge mistake. I'm sad for him. But all of my favorite characters are here and I loved it.

I did like learning the genealogy of this generation of shadow hunters but found the story a bit slow. I like the way Brother Zachariah is the thread running through the stories and intertwining with the various characters even more so in my mind than the shadow market.

Loved reading about the Herondales, Jem, the Fairchilds and Lightwoods. Miss the Infernal Devices! Patiently waiting for the Last Hours.

I must say that this was most certainly more of an eye opener for the bridge set up to TLH and I simply cannot wait for Chain of Gold to see how Matthew's sin affects him ( my heart broke for him 😔 ) even more so since it's a few years later and how his relationships may have changed with his family and Jamie. I just hope he gets a happy ending at the end of it all....poor Matty 😭

Loved it it gives a great insight into who Mathew is how he wasn't truly perfect but it explains why James was able to become so self destructive without hid parbati noticing simply because Matthew himself was unsure of to redeem his own personal pain I feel so sorry for poor Charlotte and Henry but the unimaginable pain of knowing your the cause of your siblings death can't wait to find out more

This was interesting. I'm really loving that these stories are being told from Brother Zachariah's (Jem) point of view. I'm curious of what's going to come of Matthew and the rest of the Fairchilds in this time.

I love these short stories and I hope that Matthew can get back most of his cheeriness self soon because he is probably now one of my favourite characters!

I really enjoyed this short story. It is very sweet and funny at parts. I also love how it shows us all of these new characters for the first time. I also always enjoy scenes at the shadow market just because I love the back story of it all.

Really good novella. Can't wait for the next one.
