1,000 Signs of Life
Received this book in excellent condition and it shipped quickly as well. Bought this book for a beginners class in Basic ASL and just me browsing through it for a little bit, it seems to be well done for beginners. The layout of the book actually was better than a book I bought a couple years ago for my granddaughter so she could sign with my grandson before he actually learns to speak. This book looks very easy to understand and even the index in the back of the book is such a helpful tool because it lets you literally look for the word you’re trying to sign so you don’t have to look through each page to find it. I thought it was a bit costly, but after seeing all the work that went into putting this book together, I find the price to be truly worth paying. Again, I highly recommend this book for any beginner in the Basic ASL.

Great book overall!
I thought this book was great! Some of the picture are a little tricky to fully see, but I think that's true with all sign language books. I like how the book is broken into categories. All of the words taught in this book are words that are used in every day conversation. I am using this book for a second semester of American Sign Language... it was cheaper to buy the book than to rent it. I would recommend this for any new beginner! :)

Good context, poorly engineered book - won't stay open!
I've completed ASL I-IV and used this book for the final certification class of ASL. That being said, this book is great for advanced ASL learners. If I was assigned this book in ASL I or II I would've been completely lost by the illustrations. The absolute most frustrating thing about this book is that is will not, no matter what you weigh it down with, stay opened. The book itself is poorly designed. An ASL learning book should be designed to stay open without holding it open. As many of you know, it isn't easy to practice sign language if one hand is occupied with holding the book open. DO NOT GET THE PAPERBACK EDITION!! Very frustrating.

A huge help in simple language
I am loosing my hearing and I have found this book to be of great help. They use this book in my sign language class. I recommend it to any one who is loosing their hearing or anyone who has a family member that is loosing their hearing. If you want to be able to communicate. Get this book! It's simple and easy to make flash cards.

Not a basic book
This might be too high level for a casual learner. My wife wanted a book so she could sign hello, etc to a few people in her gym, this book was too complicated for that goal.

A topic oriented dictionary
A very good topic oriented dictionary. Doesn't explain signs very well but good for use of teacher for a community class.

Great study book for learning signing
I've used other books but none as easy to use and as well put together as this one. Having the different catagories together was great. Having the words in alpha order was helpful in finding certain words when needed.
