Great game, solid story line!
I picked up this game during quarantine and I don't regret it. Had an outstanding storyline. You really get emotionally involved with the characters, and I love the era it took place in. The only reason why i'd give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I felt that there wasn't quite enough combat with enemies. I typically prefer more weapon choice, and unfortunately with Amicia, you only get to use the slingshot. It's pretty entry level although you can adjust the level of difficulty! I'd still recommend, it didn't disappoint.

A surprise hit and a game you shouldn't miss
So after hearing all the praise for A Plague Tale: Innocence, I decided to take a chance and try it out. This is an extremely well made third-person stealth action game by a studio that seemed to have come out of nowhere. You'll be playing the role of Amicia de Rune in 14th century France. After returning to her family estate on a hunt with her father, she then visits her sickly brother but not after the French Inquisition attacks and her and her brother Hugo are on the run to survive. You're quickly shown the ropes at this point and learning about basic mechanics like taking cover, when to leave cover to sneak past enemy paths, & using distractions to your advantage. Afterwards you'll also get access to Amicia' sling for puzzle solving and combat.Once combat comes around, you need to know that for the most part it's a one hit kill for you. Most of the time you want to rely on stealth but if you use your dodge and aim quickly, you should be fine early on to take out enemies. This will only work for a time until enemies start to use more armor and other tools to counter these tactics. Luckily for you, you'll get access to different ammo types and upgrades for your equipment if you have enough resources to craft them. Puzzles aren't too difficult and if you happen to get stuck, try to find anything shiny to hit or even reload a checkpoint if your not sure what your goal is.Visually the game looks amazing, Asobo Studios has used the same middle ware solution as Resident Evil 8 known as Quixel Megascans as well as motion capture for character movements. Small details like the correct sheen on a leather belt to individual strands of hair when examining the hair styles on many people. A minor thing I noticed was that facial animations aren't as good as the cut-scene during game-play, there is proper lip syncing during dialogue but nothing else animated on their faces. It tends to have a poker-face effect if you stop & look too closely. The elephant in the room that I haven't mentioned yet are the rats. A Plague Tale takes place during the outbreak of the bubonic plague, also known as The Black Death. The game adds a supernatural flair to these rats and they can number literally in the thousands in real time across a level. Getting caught in any part of the rat horde is basically instant death. Using your wits to escape the rat horde or use them to take out your enemies can be the difference of keeping most of your resources or barely scraping by for a while.Audio is quite good with the mo-cap actors also handling voice acting. I was genuenly surprised on how good it was after finding out they used child actors for the main roles, it can be hit or miss using child actors with any kind of medium and I think they did a great job. Sometimes the writing for character dialogue can be kind of weird though, not sure if its trying to be historically accurate or translation quirks but sometimes it sounds strange.A Plague Tale: Innocence is well worth your time but it can feel like a bit of a slow burn at times. Play at your own pace and enjoy the ride, it's quite the adventure.

Very unique
This was a great game. It wasn’t “open world“ which to me was a good thing. There were places to explore but you’re more or less restricted in the paths you take. This is not a wild action game. There’s certainly tense moments, but it’s all about stealth...one hit and you’re dead. The setting for this game was amazing. Having the game take place in the mid-1300s lent it such character and the graphics are top notch. There’s some gory stuff in this and it looks amazing. You feel like it’s a movie sometimes. I’d definitely recommend it. At this point, it’s been out for a while so you’re not even paying full price for a cool as hell game.

Loved it
I really enjoyed this game! Great story, great puzzles, lots of myself and others getting eaten by rats. I was looking for something sort of like Last of Us and this was awesome on its own.

MASTERPIECE
Can I just say, in a world now full of RPG's and open world games, it is so refreshing to have a game that feels linear. Its a good old throwback to when games had 'levels' as opposed to a massive world to explore. As good as that is, the small scale levels make way for more detail and make the player feel less overwhelmed. Each Chapter (as they are called here), is beautifully designed and compose a story that is so heartbreakingly well executed. Sometimes its hard to remember its actually a game you're playing, not a movie. Absolutely a game of the year contender. A Pure masterpiece.

Lovely game
A lovely game with beautiful graphics, enigmatic music and a compelling storyline. Controls are straightforward and easy to master. With a simple combat system, your character has a sling which can fire rocks and later, other projectiles. Useful materials can be collected and used to craft either upgrades to your sling, ammo pouch, items pouch etc and also various projectiles to use in the sling. There are no manual saves, but automatic saves at various checkpoints throughout each chapter. If a main character is killed, then you restart at the last checkpoint. Gameplay is a mixture of stealth, distraction, various levels of combat where you have to quickly dispatch enemies with your sling, or by other methods using the environment or manipulation of the rats. There is also some co-operative puzzle solving involved.Gameplay and storyline starts fairly simple but gets more involved as the game progresses. The characters really grow on you, and the acting is superb.A game well worth buying.

Rise of the Rat King
Brilliant game let down by terrible last few levels and tedious final boss. Some mild spoilers here. Most positive reviews I read here are from people who have not completed the game. I would agree this game starts very strong. The stealth mechanics and pace of the game feel very tight, at times it feels like you barely scraped though dangerous situations. Initially I was worried when I perceived the game to be one big escort mission (I hate escort missions in games) but it’s actually far from this. The tutorial at the start tells you if you leave Hugo he gets distressed but this never happened to me once, mainly because you don’t really leave him anywhere unless the story forces you.You will meet some companions along the way who join you and have ways of making your life easier. Their AI seems pretty good where they can come to the rescue if you get into trouble. Amicia develops well throughout the game and goes from being relatively helpless to a deadly shot with the sling and lots of creative ways to interfere with guards and manipulate rats. The game actually becomes easier as she improves, which makes sense.Sadly and predictably the spotlight shifts to Hugo later in the game putting you in some awful forced combat situations where stealth is no option as the enemies know where you are, even if you do try hiding. The issue is controlling Hugo’s ability which feels like you are fighting with the camera (right analog stick) while also fighting guards and archers. It’s really bad and the last few stages keep forcing you into combat which is the games weakest point. As for the last boss, it’s one of the worst I’ve had to face in any game. He might fit God of War or Dark Souls but really doesn’t suit this game. It’s not that he is hard, it’s the combat that’s the problem again while having to also craft at the same time. In addition to this you have to dodge rats from landing on your head and the ones that spawn in off camera and get you every time. Also how does a 180 year old man take 3 shots to the head when everyone else goes down with one? If your quick with the swing you can hit him twice but the second stone will phase through his head which sums up how rubbish the combat is.It’s like 2 different games in one where the second one forces you to forget all the tactics and strategy you learnt in the first and replaces it with dumb and clumsy combat. I’m left feeling disappointed with it, rather than annoyed.
