This book is beautifully written with very stylish projects that are expertly photographed. The tips and tricks from the author are very valuable and useful. I find myself looking through the book often because the design is gorgeous. The author is witty and enthusiastic as well.

Basic lacks potential
The book is well written with nice photographs but lacks the sophistication of what this medium could bring to a beginner. I returned the book, although he techniques on how to begin the process is explained, the book did not offer patterns or designs for more useful and sophistiated artistic designs or ideas.

No pattern templates - you are on your own
This book offers some useful information for getting started with punch needle and has some pretty projects. I read through the beginner information quickly and it seemed complete and easy to understand and apply. The photos in this book are also really great. But, if you are someone who wants the ease of having a book with projects which you can replicate exactly by having access to pattern templates and supply lists which indicate the brand and exact color of yarns used, then this book is not for you. This book does not have any patterns/templates, and does not provide exact color lists. For example the rug project just says “navy rug yarn” and “remnants or variegated yarn” (of other colors)- but no mention of exact brands or colors. So if you want to make the rug exactly as pictured - good luck. Then the fact there are not any templates is the most disappointing part for me. I really loved the butterfly project in this book and wanted to make it, but the author used printed burlap and stitched over the burlap. I also really liked these sort of geometric animals as well, but again you just have to draw them yourself. If I cannot find that printed butterfly burlap or draw some geometric type animals myself I’m out of luck. Then while many of the designs are geometric and you can draw with a ruler, there is still a fair degree of guesswork. So for instance with the rug project - it is basically like draw this rectangle on your fabric of this size for the outline then draw in 2” right triangles. That is literally it. So the bottom line for me is - if you don’t care about templates or exact color lists and are comfortable with a degree of experimentation and figuring things out on your own, I think this is a terrific modern approach to punch needle with some beautiful projects. If you want something that lays it all out there for you and is extremely easy to replicate, then this book might not be for you. If I bought the physical copy I would return, but I thought the kindle version (and did not purchase accidentally), so cannot return.
