The Perfect Story, With A Big Dramatic Twist.
Hello there somewhat indie comic book fans,Today I'd like to write a recommendation for you. Basically, I have to tell you a little about myself, first. I have had a growing interest in comics for six months now. I have read a lot of Batman, Watchmen, and a little superman from DC. I've read a little bit of Fantastic Four, Iron Man, and X-Men from Marvel. I've also read plenty of assorted indie titles. I love Kirkman's Walking Dead, and Invincible, as well as Scott Pilgrim. This book, however was recommended by a friend of mine early on. It was my first Image Comics title. I must say, this is one of my favorite books. The characters, a plot that is fluid, but at the very end has a twist that nobody will see coming. The art is the icing on top of the cake. This trade collects the entire miniseries with no bonus content. It's a basic trade with a little thicker than normal glossy stock. The covor has a neat specular effect, where there are characters printed in gloss, so you can only see them when the light hits them right. It is a great value for a perfect story. The writing of Hill is wonderful. He does really great work developing all the featured characters through the plot, which is why the twist hits home so well. I also love the artwork. It's very neat and clean, yet messy in just the right way when action flares up.I want to thank Joe Hill for creating this masterpiece. His creative team's efforts show throughout. I have no higher recommendation for this work of art.

Very moving story about growing up and both the value and limits of fantasy
I didn't really know what to expect from this book going in, except that a friend had raved about it. It's about a middle-school aged girl who is a bit of a loner and only feels comfortable in her fantasies, particularly those where she battles enormous giants with a magical hammer. She struggles at school and while she makes a new friend, she also pushes that friend away with abrasive behavior. It's clear that some issue at home is bothering her, but it's not revealed what that is until fairly late in the book. The book is largely from her perspective and treats her fantasies as pretty real. A giant does indeed show up and the battle with it is depicted as quiet scary and epic. When it becomes clear why these fantasies are so powerful to the protagonist, it doesn't at all feel like a cheap twist but is very poignant and will likely have you in tears. The art, which is in grayscale (mostly black and while with some shading), is a bit offbeat, and I'm not sure how to describe the style, but I enjoyed it. The sense of design was very good, and the storytelling was clear.Image comics has really made its name with more sci-fi oriented stuff, but this is a great comic book with a fairly simple but deeply compassionate story. I'm glad I own it to re-read and lend to others.

Giantslayer
I recently read this book for the second time after a few years. I remember loving the story when I read it then, and it was just as amazing the second time around. That being said, there are some pretty tough moments in this book. Barbara, the main character, is not particularly likeable. For me, that didn't hurt the story one bit. Some people might be put off by her attitude. I think it makes the other elements of the story more impactful. There are some fantasy elements in this book, although it is mostly set in the real world. Those fantasy portions connect more to imagination and escapism. They blend well with the rest of the story to the point that it becomes difficult to tell whether they are real or not. The other characters help round out Barbara's story, giving her support and opposition. Together these aspects create a powerfully emotional story. The art is great. It's in a manga style, which I don't always care for, but it works here. It ties right into Barbara's perspective. The combination of the story and the art create a well rounded book that is worthy of the praise it receives.

No actual Giants were harmed in the writing of this review
I Kill Giants was a book that I had heard about for a while now but never got around to picking up. My six year old daughter is starting to get in to reading and I have been picking up books that I thought she would like.I read this before I let her read it and it's a good thing I read it first because the subject matter and some of the language is a little over her age.It is definitely a book that everyone else can get in to.It's the story of eight year old Barbara Thorson. She hunt and kills Giants. Or does she?Barbara lets everyone who will listen know that she kills Giants. She spends all of her time reading books about Giants and keeps her Giant killing Hammer named Coveleski with her at all times. The only problem is, nobody else can see these giants either. The reader spends most of the story wondering if Barbara is just plain crazy, or if there really is something more going on than we can see. There is something going on underneath the surface. This story is about one little girl's fears and dreams, it's about how she copes with events, and solves her problems.Oh and it's about hunting and killing giants.Or is it?

Powerful and heartbreaking
The book is amazing. Incredibly well-crafted by both writer and artist, the story lays a path rich and clever and profound. I cried at end, messily, and I will read it over and over again. Unfortunately, this seems to be out of print, and the copy I purchased, while labeled as being in 'good' condition, had most of the pages falling out. I was lucky, the pages were all there, and I didn't miss a thing (just I had to carry the book around in a ziploc bag to keep the pages together and in the right order! I can't wait for a reprint to come out. At a reasonable cost, please. :) I could stand to have a few copies of this one!

Amazing emotive story
I Kill Giants is the story of a loner at school escaping in to a fantasy world. But all is not as it seems with Barbara, and Barbara is not what they think she seems to the children at school that torment her, her family or her only friend.Think Pan's Labyrinth [DVD] [2006 ] (with less mucking around and more D&D) mashed with Franklyn [DVD] [2008 ] for the fantasy / reality collision and you'll probably be about there, though the quality of the storytelling in "I Kill Giants" is far superior to anything the film Franklyn produced (despite my fervently wishing it otherwise). I don't want to spoil too much of the plot, but I found Barbara easy to sympathise with - her isolation is illustrated well, but so is her overall journey and it has a truly saddening and yet heartwarming finale. The artwork in this is edgy at times, with the action a little blurred and hard to follow - but then so is the main protagonist so if that was the intention of the artwork, then I got it.There is a great section at the end of the book with concept sketches and walkthroughs of the concept from both Joe Kelly and JM Ken Nimura. The binding and print quality of this is also excellent, so I would expect it to have a decent shelf life, though I may still get the I Kill Giants Titan Edition anyway, as I have the hardcover editions of all the other graphic novels I love, and the Titan edition of this is still not too expensive. Brilliant, simply briliant
This is easily one of the smartest, most insightful and powerful books I have ever read... and it's a comic - I was totally blown away by it.
