Don’t Waste Your Time or Money
Poorly written and boring. I’m not an expert, but I know false information when I see it, and it makes me question everything else I read in the book that I hadn’t already seen/heard before. The author doesn’t understand the meaning of the word “associate.” You can’t be a capo and an associate at the same time. That goofball Michael Franzese was not a member of the Bonanno family. Sammy Gravano didn’t die in jail. I’m sure there’s more screwups in the book but that’s just some of them.Maybe Vincent Gigante was a crook, but he never took my money and gave me a boring book that didn’t get fact-checked or proofread. I feel cheated and I want justice.

Amazing book. If you are into all things mafia
Amazing book. If you are into all things mafia, and have an extensive library of books on the subject, then THIS book NEEDS to be added. It is truly an insightful history into the only "Ivy League Family" centering mostly on the last and greatest of the New York mafia dons. There will never be another Godfather, Don, or Boss like the Chin, his name will forever be associated with the most historical figures within the New York underworld along the likes of Luciano, Costello, Genovese, and Gambino. A must read by all accounts.

Great Book. Easy Read.
Great book. Really enjoyed reading it and I have read a lot of mafia related books. Real good look inside Chin's life. If you like reading about the Mafia than this book is for you.

Solid Account of Gigante
Well written, nicely paced account of the unique life of Vincent Gigante. Occasional puns are annoying, not as clever as the author seems to think. Otherwise, very good.

The most fascinating boss in the modern era
There is so little information on Chin Gigante out there besides the later crazy/court years. I wanted more on the years before. This book covers the gaps I was most interested in. Mainly the 1960's through the 80's as he gained and cemented his power, while cloaking his true power behind many layers of protection. The author does a very thorough job and it is a great read.

Did not keep me interested. A lot of jumping around and hard to remember all the Mob guy names and relevance.

Gigante-Crazy like a fox!
Larry McShane uses a mixture of news articles, court documentation, medical reports and testimonies from law enforcement officers, mob informants and family members to build a historical picture of Vincent 'Chin' Gigante, boss of the Genovese crime family, one of the 5 main crime families in New York.It makes for an interesting story, focusing on the point that Gigante supposedly had mental health problems (which subsequently kept him out of jail for the best part of 30 years) whilst running one of the biggest New York crime families of the late 20th century and fooling the authorities. It's a satisfactory read but there is a tendency to jump around from one thing to another quite a lot and you feel that you are reading through old documents and piecing together a picture rather than hearing a story about the man himself.Read this if you are interested in 'The Oddfather' Gigante but in my opinion there are better books around about organised crime and New York crime families.

A great read about, probably, the last Boss of Bosses.
Very interesting read about Vincent 'the chin' Gigante. The book offers a slightly different insight to the most powerful and mysterious Mafia boss of the last 50 years. I'd heard stories about the Chin and watched documentaries about his crazy behaviour, but to actually read about the extent he took his performance as a mentally incapable person, while running the most feared family in America is at times unbelievable. I found myself even having a bit of sympathy towards him and disliking how the FBI and government constantly pursued him. His insanity act was that good. I would have given the book 5* except that at times I got confused as to who the author was talking abou( there are so many different characters and nicknames mentioned). All in all,a great read about probably the last Boss of Bosses.

... on gigante - there's some - so i was disappointed with that
there's not a huge amount of new stuff on gigante - there's some - so i was disappointed with that. a lot of it is stuff that's covered elsewhere (about the genovese family). that said it's very well written and the stuff with his brother is good.
