One important factor to consider for the quality is the pH value of graphene oxide when it is in the form of dispersion/solution. The preliminary graphene oxide produced by Hummer method has normally a pH value of from 2 to 3 if no washing step is involved in the entire production process. The acidic nature (pH=2-3) of the un-washed grapheme oxide will significantly deteriorate the results of its applications. Therefore, it is advisable to ask a vendor about the pH of the graphene oxide before buying it. Our graphene oxide based products were obtained after steps of repetitive washing with a large amount of distilled water. The final products of our graphene oxide dispersions are close to neutral, having a pH of about 6-7. Our solid grapheme oxide products were obtained after washing and drying and have a pH of about 6-7 when they dissolve into distilled water with the aid of sonication.
