Get the right tool for pass-though connectors.
A friend had made a Cat5e cable for me using pass-through connectors and a cheap crimped not made for pass-through connectors, trimming the excess wire stubs with regular wire cutters before crimping. The cable tested ok and worked fo a while before my AREDN mesh node mysteriously reset to default settings and nothing else on the local switch would connect with the rest of the net. After replacing both connectors using the new Platinum crimped that shears off the excess wire ends as it crimps, the cable was restored to service and everything works.I turned the ends of the original cable into a pair of short jumper cables by adding a fresh pass-through connector to each of the cut ends. Both jumpers tested ok in the cheap cat5 continuity tester but the original ends would not engage in the cable-to-cable adaptor due to the pass-through stubs that had been trimmed with the wire cutter. I re-crimped both of those connectors using the Platinum. It trimmed about another millimeter off the stubs and the connectors now properly engaged in the adapter.Yes, you can probably make a non-pass-through tool work with pass-though connectors by very carefully pulling the cable back by a millimeter or so after trimming before crimping, but why not just get the right tool in the first place?!
