An Outstanding Read
A Great Read for anyone with a interest in German History. The book has Excellent Genealogical Tables of the Dynasties which are easy to follow to find out who built the Magnificent Palaces & the Relationship to each other .

PLUS:An enjoyable read. Unusually, it is written in a style resembling a travel diary (eg in the section on the castle where the Queen’s ancestors come from, it starts “It was a dark day in Coburg…when we arrived first thing in the morning there was no one about” or (in another chapter) “ The tour was in German with only a scanty one page handout in English:but I was content with looking and enjoying the views”.MINUS: the huge disappointment with the book is with the photos. Not only are they all black and white, but virtually all are tiny (eg less than a quarter of a page in size - and the book is only 8” high). There are not even any half or full page photos. Worse, the black and white photos seriously lack contrast, so are of a very faded appearance. Based on knowledge of other books, printing it in China, rather than England, may have allowed for high contrast colour photos; but we have what we have. The book is written from a historical, rather than an architectural perspective, so will be disappointing to a reader interested in the latter. Thus one reads about family histories and what occupants did in their schloss over centuries, rather than their design and interiors, how they were built and expanded over time etc.The book has no index.OVERALL: the complete lack of colour illustrations really makes it only of interest to someone who may be travelling around the schloss of Bavaria or is deeply interested in their history. It can however be recommended as an excellent and up to date introduction to the subject and lead the reader on to find (on Amazon!) detailed books (with colour photos) on particular famous palaces of which there are many in this area, as Bavaria ( and adjoining Saxony) are their epicentre in Germany.
