Worked barely with Hopper 3
Wanted to max out my DVR capacity, added this to Hopper 3 that already had one larger external drive. Using this to only back up my favorite shows in case Hopper and other drives crash after years of use, Hopper slow to pickup and set up drive but worked eventually. Update: locks up on occasion but suspect crummy Hopper software because other drive from different supplier also locks up regularly requiring frequent reboots of hopper, don't expect flawless performance with Dish products

Purchased for camper
We wanted a dvr for camper. This got better reviews than what Dish offered. It works great with our Wally set up.

Used with Directv Receivers - UPDATE after 1.5 yrs - WARNING
I bought 2 for 2 Directv DVR's... The device works well when you first attach it, Directv formats its accordingly (takes some time) and then all ok. Its a bit loud as DTV DVR's will constantly read/write and all of the head movement and selection makes clicking noises. Think of that for placement, but i had to move one out of the guest bedroom. After about 1 year, i started having issues with one of them to the point where shows where unwatchable, then it finally just failed.. failed as in not accessible by DTV... it would not boot despite multiple tries (leaving it on for days with it constantly "checking".. Also, any time the power goes out, both would take hours to boot up due to DTV processing the external drive with a lot of content. So I lost the first one and started over with the internal drive. Then the 2nd one started having issues while watching from another device using "whole home" sharing.. its freezes and skips. Some shows have this issue even locally only on that device.. so.. We are currently watching down all the content we have on the the last receiver that I "updated" with these drives. If i had to do it all over again, i would not upgrade at all. I do not think its 100% the drive's fault, i believe its DTV software and hi usage.. which is why i gave it 3 stars.. You have been warned.. :)

Package appeared torn as though it was a return but it works.
Package was from an obvious return so I was worried but all parts were intact. It appears to be working as the 88% full recordings from my Dish Hopper will take about an hour to transfer to the new hard drive. One call to Dish support and a small one time Dish charge got the formatting started. Only issue was the instructions said to use the seat cable to the Hopper 3 which has no such connection so had to use USB 3 cable which was also included. I assume it will all load to the new drive without issues and will update if it proves to be defective but hoping it was just returned for another reason.

Awesome !
Soooo glad I ordered this H/D. Had an appointment with Dish to replace my hopper 2000 with one that had sling and get the super joey also. Old hopper was 21% full took me 3 days to transfer the recordings at my leisure of course was in no hurry. When I first hooked it up according to the directions provided it did not show up or recognized by the hopper unit, used the e sata cable that was provided. I then unplugged it from surge protector then the power switch on back of unit disconnected the e says then used the USB cable plugged it back in flipped the power switch within 5 sec it was recognized and the hopper was ready to re format it. Just as easy to transfer recordings back to new hopper. Very chuffed with this little unit which btw seems to be built like a sh-- brick house a little heavy and nice aluminum outer case.

A must for Wally users
My old seagate failed and needed a replacement. Finding a device that is usb 2.0 compatible with a separate power supply vs the usb powered ones is getting more difficult. The dish receivers will not work with flash drives, so the hunt was on. Plugged this in and it was immediately recognized. Formatting was quick and I now have a 2TB DVR storage for my Wally. Ordered a second one for the other receiver.

This 2TB external hard drive works with Dish Hopper 3 for extra storage.
Wanted more storage space for the Dish Hopper 3. Originally, Dish was only able to be used with a 2 TB external hard drive, so I bought this model, which works fine:). Upon calling Dish for help with the setup, since the USB 3 port on the Hopper didn't work, (only the USB 2 port works for such), the agent said they had recently upgraded the Hoppers to accept 7TB of external storage, which was a plus, since "more is better":). Upon further reading, 7 TB drives aren't available yet! Maybe Dish will upgrade their Hopper 3 again, to store 8 TB or more in the future. Unfortunately, neither Fantom, Western Digital, nor Seagate knew if their 6 TB external drives would work with the Hopper, so in essence, I needed to be the "tester". Thus far, I've tested the WD, which works fine, expecting the Fantom drive to work, as well.

It's a nice drive but you have to reset it alot to get the dish to see it
I have this hooked to my dish network DVR and I have to keep resetting the DVR and the hard drive to get it to recognize so I can use it. Becomes a real pian because I reset about 3 times a day

The only hard drive with a "mouse" inside
This drive was instantly recognized on my Arris PVR and was ready to use within a minute. I was looking forward to using it for years. Unfortunately, there was a constant irregular-patterned clicking and scratching noise that came from the drive, even when the PVR was turned off. It sounded just like a mouse gnawing on something behind drywall. Turning off its power obviously stops the problem, but the PVR sends a message that the drive has been disconnected and it will use the PVR's original hard drive for recording. What good is it having an expansion hard drive when you can't stand to have it on? Sadly, it will be sent back.

There may be some equipment reliability issues. :(
Just from the outset I want to say this is NOT the review I wanted to write! The HDD came in good time, looks great, has a good instruction manual and has been thoughtfully packaged for folks who need an eSATA external HDD to expand their PVR capacity. It just would not work. The drive is recognised by my PVR as being there but that is all. When connected to a PC, it is not even recognized as connected.I am IT proficient and did some homework with my equipment (HDD and the PVR), unfortunately it remains a brick with a pretty blue light.Sorry folks, but based on my experiences I can't recommend this one. :(

Well built but much noisier than expected
The drive is nicely made and easy to install. So why 3 stars? Well the drive is supposed to use a quiet PVR hard disk. I dont know if it does or not, but this drive is significantly more noisy than the one built into my PVR. It continuously makes loud ticking noises. More than my Western Digital normal PC drive does when writing.

DEAD TWICE
I bought the 2g unit for Shaw receiver. Worked for 8 months then lost everything. Took 3 months to finally get a return email instructing me to return for warranty. Sent back at a cost of 38.00 CDN. 4 months later, I got it back. Plugged it in for 1 month then it stopped working. Again lost everything. Now no one will return my emails, or calls, but they keep sending promotions and sale items. nice looking paper weight, but I found a prettier rock. DON'T BUY Fantom Drives. JUNK!!

worked for a little while, then broke down.
I bought the 2TB DVR external hard drive expander in Oct. last year for a good (I thought) dvr expander because I wanted more recording space. (I only have 500mb). It worked fine for a couple months, then it wouldn't let my machine record anymore. I rebooted it, then it worked for a couple days and stopped, rebooted again and couldn't get it going. I just kept hoping it would work again, but now I just disconnected it, and now my dvr works better and faster, but no extra space. Very dissapointed (paid 165.00 dollars for it).
