Too Pretty Kenney: From The Original Crips Of Compton To Beyond

NORD ST. 2100
Having lived on Nord St from the time I was 3, and for 30 more years. I was on the streets when KC made his appearance in the neighborhood. I experienced a lot of what he wrote about first hand. I attended Marian Anderson Elementary, Ralph J. Bunche Jr High, and Centennial Sr. High. I know for a fact that a lot of what he said is true, cause I was there. It was a time when you had fight to go to school, and I went everyday. I was on some of those bus rides to downtown. I was in some of those fights at Centennial. But my family structure would not allow me to be extreme, in other words, Momma wasn't playing it. I was the only "CRIP" allowed in Gonzales Park, which is Blood turf, because I was involved in sports. My best friend was Lonnie Smith, who played professional Baseball, and lived on Piru. I can truly attest to a lot of stuff in this book. I have been to the Red House, I remember the party at the multipurpose center, I remember going to summer camp, where Tookie, and other Crips were counselors. Yeah, I was there from the beginning, and through GODS Grace and Mercy, I too survived. KC, I enjoyed reading this, it brought back some true memories, so Thank You. Whether you like the book, or not, KC deserves props for opening a door into the past, a pass that lot of the Hommies didn't survive, and that a lot of you can only imagine. And like I said, had not been for a STRICT FAMILY up bringing, who knows, I might be writing this book. GREAT JOB KC. Only wish the Jackie, Tony, Cheryl, Donald, and Carol (RIP) could be here to enjoy it as well.

This Book is truly relevent to blacks in South Central LA and Compton! Legacy is Important
I am honored that the author wrote about his life in Compton. I applaud you, the book is written well and never a dull moment. Its truly an art when you are able to keep your audience engaged. The book keeps you interested, and its very hard to put it down. The book was long overdue, and I truly thank Pretty Kenney for his time and effort of preserving Compton’s black history which is much needed being Latinos, are now attempting to claim African American’s Compton legacy. For those of us born and raised in Compton this book will leave a life long legacy for all of those who lived in Compton or grew up in that same era. I hope that the author will write an additional copy. I am eager to read more. It brought back a lot of good memories, memories when the author speaks of certain events and places within Compton. I grew up on 131st Wilmington, Bills Market was at the corner from our house. My family lived in Compton for over 30 years and to this day I still have many, many family members who remain in Compton and will never leave it. The author Pretty Kenny and one of my cousin’s Kenny H were best friends, tighter than blood brother. I applaud you for striving and surviving in the City of Compton.Compton’s racial demographics has changed drastically. Once mostly white, then mostly black, now majority Latino, Compton once teemed with violence, with murders peaking at nearly 90 a year during the crack epidemic of the early 1990s. Gang violence peaked shortly after the riots following Rodney King’s infamous arrest and beating by police in 1992.Blessing to you and your family and grateful that you left a lifetime legacy for all of us who called Compton home. I plan on purchasing several copies of this book for other family members to share with our younger generations.

Good read.
Finish the book, and it's good. I been watching videos of Too Pretty Kenny on Kev Mac videos. Some of the stuff in the book. Was talk about on Kev Mac,and some wasn't.Like Too Pretty Kenny time in the Army. Among other things I don't want to ruin.Too Pretty Kenny know how to tell a good story. Some parts was funny, but others are dead serious. It lets you realize how serious stuff was bacc in the day.I was reading one review, and It said how it never told what happen to Bully. That is a lie. The book tells the first time Too Pretty Kenny came across Bully, and what happen to Bully. Who ever made that review. Can't read,or didn't read the whole book. One of the main reason I did a review to clear that up.If you're a fan of Too Pretty Kenny. You should be buying the book right now. It was good from start to end.

Somewhat Entertaining but Lackluster Effort
This book was not well done. It seemed rushed and some statements were conjecture. Other events were already told by other individuals on Kev Mac Videos. The author spent a considerable amount time talking about a person called the Bully. Never providing who the Bully was or in other words, what was his real name and where did he live and what happened to him. Also the author's timeline was out of order. It was an easy read but not a great book. I would not recommend this as a serious book on the gang culture during that time (early 70s). No Gang Leader more like a victim.
