A little artsy, but you can't help but be amazed
I will try to write this review with the respect the author deserves. From the beginning of the book you will get the sense of the joy he finds in the "Origami Craft" he has mastered. The author wants to take you on this journey, the journey that he knows well and that has given him great joy. But be prepared to be intimidated by the trying to follow a master. The experience is a little like following an olympic skier down the slope. Despite all the great instruction, you may have the legitimate fear that that you will not have the same ride that he has. The author anticipates this and tries to prepare you, but the preparations only serves remind you that he is trying to teach you want it took him much dedication to do.This being said, if you are a fearless and want to learn from a master, this is a good book. There is much anyone could learn from this book, and the truly dedicated may be richly rewarded. I would not recommend you make this your first Origami book. But it might be a great second if you are hooked on breathing life into paper. I have done some basic origami before and I have an interest in paper craft. My library has several books on making boxes for gifts (which I have done for one Xmas), the paper clock which was a very big effort though not entirely successful, 2 books on pop-up cards which I completed every project (great fun), and origami that flies (elaborate paper airplanes, and a few of them actually flew). With this book,... I quit after reading the instructional parts leading up to the first project. I felt I wanted to have a good bit of time before jumping in. The author deserve credit for sharing openly, techniques that he has worked to master. Only time will tell how many find the journey as rewarding as the author. - Very best on your journey should you should to accept it!

A great origami guide for serious folders with excellent tips on producing paper
I ordered this book expecting a collection of fairly advanced diagrams. I was particularly interested in the Cattleya orchid model and the frog, two of my favorite subjects to fold. I was very pleasantly surprised with the book for a number of reasons. The quality of the printing and binding is superb. The diagrams are easy to follow and very thorough. The information on how to produce your own paper to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing results for any model is very nice. I do have a few very minor issues with the book. The first is that the models designed to be folded with duo colored paper do not have two-tone diagrams. Even though you may be folding with duo paper, it makes folding easier to have a diagram with a two-color scheme. The second issue is more of a personal one. To really achieve the best results from any of these models they need to be wet folded from handmade paper. Standard origami paper or paper foil simply will not produce the results you are looking for. That being said, I am very happy I purchased this book and would recommend it to any origami enthusiast.

More info than usual and a dvd
So, I got this specifically as it really discussed how to choose and even augment paper when doing origami. And what is also really great is a dvd that shows the folding of the pieces, and give points on wet folding how to's.If you're looking for some detailed tips beyond basic folding and the store bought paper, then this is for you.

Inspiring and rigorous.
As someone who enjoys origami without being especially gifted at it, I found this book for advanced origami practitioners to be very inspiring. The author's depth of understanding, the seriousness of his vision and the poetry of his creations all come together on the page. The models in this book are NOT for novices: indeed I do not expect to be able to make the more complex and beautiful pieces at all, ever. But the simpler ones are not only achievable, they also teach important lessons in perception (how to interpret the instructions) and -- humility! I read the whole book through right away, but have returned to it often, with pleasure and appreciation. Once again: this book is not for novices and many of the models do require more-than-casual skill.

Very nice, especially if you want to get into wet folding
This is a good book for those looking for advanced designs. The book presents a number of remarkable patterns. What is nice is that this does a good job of presenting wet fold techniques. Every design is a wet fold work. The book does have a small section on paper making, but don't think this will be a complete description. It may help you begin crafting your own paper. Not a book for beginners.

Happy with it
My oldest son (9 years) had already mastered a few Origami books. He helped me teach an origami class to his homeschool co-op, last semester. I ordered this book in hopes of challenging him, and it certainly did. He has managed to create a few things for the pages, and it has not been easy at all. It is good to see him trying something harder.

Take your origami to the next level
This is a must-read for anyone who is ready for the beginner who is looking to bring his/her origami to the next level. The beginning of the book expands the beginner's knowledge of folding techniques. LaFosse also explains the different types of paper available and their uses. As other reviews mentioned, the beginning of the book is the most help. The models are secondary information.

Instructions are unclear and nowhere near detailed enough
This book at first glance looks great but it should come with a health warning...The author does not seem to believe in adding in all the steps, simply relying on obtuse arrows to indicate things at times. This means that instead of following step by step instructions you are left trying to fill in the blanks on more than one occasion...I am by no means a beginner when it comes to origami and have folded some very complex pieces but this seems to be a case of an author who is sitting back smug and pretty whilst watching you struggle though unclear and incomplete instructionsIf you are ok, or average with origami folding then I would not buy this book. If you are bordering on expert then you might stand a chance!

Super birthday present
Nice and difficult, which pleased my son who is keen on origami. So far, he has enjoyed making quite a few. I bought the book on the strength of two Amazon reviews which both intimated that the projects were challenging. It's makes a super birthday present too.

Highly recommend for intermediate level to enable them to progress to an advanced level. All projects are excellently diagramed and fully supported by DVD, which explains and shows clearly how to progress. Paper making section makes an interesting read. Extremely pleased with this book, great price nice looking, and if you like birds, bats, fish etc.. great projects to work your way through.
