Red River 67013 Valley Splendor Nyjer Thistle Bird Seed, 50-Pound

The seed is fine and the birds eat it happily. I give it 4 stars because of the amount of plant trash in the bag compared to others I've purchased in the past. Lots of little sticks and stems although not enough to make it unusable.

I opened the bag in my bird seed bin expecting fifty pounds of Nyjer thistle seed; instead I got fifty pounds of hulled sunflower seeds and no food for my poor little finches.

This 50 pound bag is a good deal when it is priced under $50.00, but the price seems to fluctuate wildly, along with a high shipping price. Very little waste material in the bag, and the finches act like they are addicted to this seed. I have had shipping damage due the bag often is just placed in a box with no padding. During shipping, the 50 pound bag bangs around inside the box denting the box, tearing the tape, and sometimes puncturing the bag spilling the expensive seed.Added later: As of today (12 June 2014) Home depot is selling 50 pounds for $64.98 plus California sales tax AND with FREE SHIPPING!!! Don't know if the free shipping is a California perk or not.

I have been buying nyjer seed for feeding birds by the 50 lb bag for years. This is one of the better sources. It appears to be cleaner than other, less dirt and other trash. The birds like it, but they are not that picky.

I bought this seed several months ago and thought this was a great price for this seed and I thought it was going to be a terrific buy/value to feed my wild birds. I gave it a great review when I was asked to give my impressions back then. I am now in June and every single bird has disappeared and will refuse to even try it. I washed and cleaned out all the feeders and refilled them with this seed and they still refuse it. I went to OSH and bought a bag of their Thistle seed and the birds have all come back. I do not know what the reason was but I DO know it was the seed. I think I have only given one other bad review on Amazon because most of the other items I buy are 4 or 5 stars but I felt that if anyone was going to buy this seed after looking at my original great review I would not feel very good about it. It could have been just the one bag of seed I got. Maybe there was something in the bag the birds did not like but in any case I felt like I should share my feelings.

Only problem is there are numerous sticks and clumps of other debris in the bag. Other than the previous, this is a great deal.
