Pedreira writes the most authoritative study of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA to date. He makes extensive use of the Brazilian national library in order to deliver an unbiased account of the roots of these sports. His research is thorough and his conclusions sound. It is written in chronological order and goes well beyond the story of Japanese immigrants in Brazil and who they taught Jiu-Jitsu to. It is also an account of the split between Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, as well as an account of catch-wrestling and western-wrestling and the role they played in Brazil. By shedding light on many misconceptions regarding the inception of Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil, "Choque" makes itself mandatory reading to any serious student of martial-arts.
