Really helpful for planning my upcoming trip, learned a lot about the area & what to see and do.

Excellent informative book if you are going to Svalbard!

I would never physically go to Svalbard because of the cold but the guidebook is excellent; giving the history and the views of the area. (I travel to many places via guidebooks.)

Spitzbergen alias Svalbard hat als Reiseziel eine Sonderstellung. Denn noch tummeln sich mehr Gelehrte, Forscher und Expeditionsteilnehmer als Touristen. Und das ist gewollt, da Norwegen alles daran setzt, dieses besondere Ökosystem zu erhalten (Stichwort Eisbären).Auch wenn die Zahl der Touristen signifikant steigt, die Adressaten dieses Reiseführers sind mindestens zur Hälfte besagte Forscher etc. Die Erläuterungen zu Fauna, Flora und Geologie nehmen daher ebenso ein großen Teil wie Informationen zu den vielfältigen Gefahren und Risiken ein.Da die touristische Infrastruktur nicht übermäßig ausgebaut ist, nimmt dieses Thema weniger Platz ein.Abgerundet wird das Ganze durch Informationen zum Franz Josefs Land und der Insel Jan van Meyen.Fazit:Es liegt hier ein hochkompetenter Reiseführer vor, der den oberflächlichen Touristen eher überfordert. Für alle anderen ist dieser Guide ein Referenzwerk erster Klasse!!!

Very informative guide to Svalbard. Read it before you go to get the best of the northern experience.

I am going to the Arctic next year and I bought this book as some pre-reading before the trip. It is not a book I read from cover to cover but enjoy dipping in and out of it.
