It's a good read.
It's a good read and its focus is on tactics that were implemented during World War I in the campaigns against the french. It reads more like a story rather than a textbook or training manual which is what I expected.

A Masterpiece
Rommel tells of his service in World War 1 as an infantry officer and provides in-depth explanations of his engagements and encounters throughout the war. Each section is ended by Rommel giving a review of the battle and what tactics worked (or didn't) and why. The book reads like a novel and keeps the readers attention throughout. The book envelopes the reader in the experiences of infantrymen during the Great War and paints a vivid picture of the events as seen through the eyes of a brilliant officer. A must read for anyone interested in infantry warfare, tactics, combat leadership, or the hardships and glory of war itself.

Should be required reading for all who lead men in combat.
265 pages that are packed with knowledgeable insights. Of course Rommel requires no introduction, his WWII exploits are well known. This book is a summation of his involvement in the learning of warfare, phase of his life in WWI. The events are clearly laid out for the reader to visualize. His hand made sketches accompany the text and most interesting is his after action analysis of an event and the lessons learned from it. Through his hand in this book you can see the WWII Rommel developing. His command learning, his actions show the daring, opportunity exploiting, deceptions, courage, excellent use of the local physical surroundings - he almost always found a way through or around an enemy position. He even learned by the mistakes he had made. The close combat scenes he relates add an additional flavor to the understanding of the infantryman's everyday plite. These are lessions that would have been useful from the American civil war through to today.

Okayโฆbut the other one referenced with out leaving out some of Rommels thoughts is better.
Decent book. Others have referenced the other version which the translations are more correct and many of Rommels thoughts are not left out is much betterโฆ

One of the Greatest soldiers of all world wars
I should have probably bought the German version, as I am originally from Germany. That said, I am only on page 5 and I absolutely love this English translation of the original book.Erwin Rommel was one of the greatest war heroes!Guderian was probably better than Rommel as a tank general but Rommel was an artist and writer and he dramatically died resisting hitler, making his final show in the theater of large wars. His book shows his talents very very well.Excellent reading!

Great insight
Bearing in mind that:(1) The pictures on the front are of wwii stuff, while this book is about wwi - Why??(2) Rommel fought on the evil side in not just one, but two world wars(3) He sounds like a not-very-nice chap(4) It's obvious that there's a bit of self promotion going on hereI highly recommend this book. The man was clearly a military genius, and, I think this book gives you a bit of an insight into that. As an avid reader of military history, and a wargamer I was inspired by this.Perhaps an interesting compare and contrast would be Slim's "Defeat into victory" Defeat Into Victory: Battling Japan in Burma and India, 1942-1945 ย as he was also a very talented general, who seems like a nice guy, fought on the right side and wasn't quite as big into self-promotion. Although Rommel was as fond of his Wurtemburgers as Slim was of his Gurkas...

This is Rommel at his objective best..
5 Stars...with a comment: This is Rommel at his objective best...very dry, very analytical. His diagrams are as entertaining as the descriptions of his small unit narratives. By a truth, this is a great tacticians study guide. It is a leadership example of the best way to manage a platoon or company sized unit. And, it is from the very hand of Rommel. Some say Rommel was luckier than professional. After reading this, you will see a man of unlimited courage, extreme capacity to stay focused in the heat of battle and a man capable of explaining it all after the action in great detail. If you really want to learn what small unit commanders should be doing and paying attention to in battle, read this book.

Key history
The autobiography of one of the great modern generals. I read this book because General George Patton thought it was important

and it's easy to see how he rose through the ranks
Rommel is a very interesting man, and it's easy to see how he rose through the ranks. He goes into lots of detail about operations he was involved in, and at the end of each section he makes observations about what was done right and wrong. The maps provided in the book can be a little confusing, but reading the text a couple of times usually gives you a good idea what the battlefield look like.
