Steampunk started as a subgenre of science fiction fascinated with steam-powered machinery and alternative histories frequently set in Victorian England. VINTAGE TOMORROWS examines steampunk s transformation from those sci-fi beginnings into a global cultural movement that influences art, fashion, design and music. Through in-depth interviews with the writers and artists who galvanized the movement, VINTAGE TOMORROWS asks what steampunk can tell us about history, community and our complicated relationship with technology. The movie features interviews with steampunk s pioneering voices, including writers William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, Cory Doctorow, China Miéville, Cherie Priest, Gail Carriger; graphic novelists Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett, musicians Abney Park and Erica Unwoman Mulkey, artist/maker Shannon O Hare and the Neverwas Haul crew, and many more.

How it might be
I like the philosophy, the world is too much specialists, and not enough generalists in thinking, we should have a bit generalists and specialists mixed together. There is nothing wrong with specialists, but the problem is the constant retraining, and re-education, which takes time. The world is too fragments of a few specialists and not enough generalists. This might show you, a possible way out or a better idea. To improve on things.

Stopped it after I couldn't take any more drivel
I enjoy Steampunk. Have for some time. Have been to Steampunk conventions and built entire virtual Steampunk cities. I am not easily bored (especially when it comes to Steampunk), but this lost me in the first 10 minutes. I have learned not to waste further time on such films.Lengthy dialogs that go nowhere, questionable statements, self-important high-sounding monologues-- all of which seem to totally miss what Steampunk is truly about: stepping out of mundane reality for a moment and having a bit of fun.Steampunk is a political statement? Steampunk is a guideline for the future? While I agree that some Steampunk-related books may dip into such areas by intent of the authors, it is doubtful this extends to the concept as a whole or can serve as a definition of what is basically a hobby. It would be difficult to believe that Steampunk is going to have any effect whatsoever on the political shaping of nations of the future. What we see here are people who take Steampunk (and themselves) far too seriously. At that point they lose the spirit and fun of the genre.Far be it from me to dictate what Steampunk is; there is no absolute definition and the concept is diverse. But I believe this video shows what Steampunk isn't: using obscene language in Victorian times and trying to make Steampunk serious. Steampunk is a visualized concept, an enjoyable, often satirical, and strange bit of fun in which people get to dress up, take on created personas, and for a few moments get away from the stresses of the outside world. It's also art and creativity and brilliance brought to life in dress, craft and presentation.I didn't bother to finish the video. Once I noted the lop-sided and (in my opinion) inaccurate portrayal of the genre, I had no need to waste further time on such platitudes. There are better Steampunk documentaries available on the Net, and far better explanations and portrayals of the genre as a whole.

Some unique insights and some political (h)activists
There is a spot about 30 minutes in that almost made me stop watching, but it passes pretty quickly. Mostly very interesting with lots of unique discussions by futurists, "historians", craftsmen, media producers, and some political points. The nice thing is that you can easily spot the people who view Steampunk as a form of political activism. Some people just want to make awesome looking functional pieces of equipment and not be lectured about your political viewpoint regarding a pseudo-historical time period.

WONDERFUL INTRO TO STEAMPUNK
Whatever you do, don't pay any attention to the bigoted negative reviews. Those people have no idea what they're talking about. I had little understanding even of the term "steampunk". This programme provided me all the most basic information I needed. After viewing this video, I feel I can now proceed forward into a more indepth exploration of Steampunk. What I saw in this video most definitely grabbed my attention; it told me to swan-dive into this wonderful, mad world of invention and imagination and hope.Again, ignore the negative reviews. Just watch this with an open mind. By the end, you will understand what Steampunk means, what it is all about, how to enter this world and how thoroughly to enjoy yourself therein.Wonderful, informative video. 5 stars!!!

A Missed Opportunity
It could have been a presentation of all the visual richness of steampunk in various media,eg. clothing, accessories, paintings, drawings, equipment, living environments, transportation--all the wonderous things people have done to it and with it to make it the engaging, entertaining concept it is, in which all types of people can become involved My brain died from lack of oxygen after the first 15 minutes because all the air had been sucked out of the room by a group of pretentious, vapid people in drab costumes trying present it as some high minded/high blown philosophical/political statement of man's relative position in society...blabbityblahblah. Steampunk is great in and of itself, it doesn't need to be justified or high-minded to be worthy of admiration.

We love this film, yesterday, today and all the tomorrows!
It's clear that the Steampunk Neo Victorian Future Past folks are brilliant people who embrace love and acceptance. How can anyone not want to be part of that close-knit community? There was so much to love here. Not the least of which was the two lovely people (Mr and Mrs. "Great") getting married with their steam family in attendance (Our Gearless Leader Gene and his Bazaar Bride Sandra were left out of the credits, but we saw you both). This film/documentary will be watched again and again. Next time, we promise not to cry. .

Less politics, more fun, please.
I'll give it two points as a cautionary tale. About a quarter of these people just have fun with the genre while the other three-quarters obviously use steampunk for their activism/political agenda. Most of these people are the same types ruining role playing games for everyone. Some people seem to feel a compulsion to make everything political and then try to force everyone else to comply to their vision. Really turned me off of steampunk.

Worth it
Even though the subtitles is off synced with the audio, it’s still worth the watch on how our modern society get into steampunk.
