Heartbreaking but addictive
This book had me hooked and had me crying less than 5 minutes after I opened it. It's a rollercoaster of a read, and it is amazing well written. It has some of the same aspects and foreshadowing style of The Stand by Stephen King, but in my opinion this book is better. There's a lot more to this plot line, and it definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat. 10/10 would recommend.

Not a New Plot, but Entertaining
In "Sick" Brett Battles give us a fast and entertaining read. Looking for a way to depopulate the world's burgeoning masses a black ops group (or Shadow Government" take your pick) is working to perfect a killer virus to let loose upon the world, only thing lacking is a vaccine to keep alive those who will be chosen.Late at night on a desolate military base recently opened, Captain Daniel Ash is awakened by the cries of Josie, his daughter. He rushed to her room to find her burning with a high fever. Calling for his wife's help, Ash put Josie in a tub and filled it with cold water. Returning to his bedroom wondering why his wife Ellen had not answered him Ash finds she has died while asleep. Filled with horror Ash dialed 911 then remembered he has not checked on his younger son Brandon. Finding Brandon okay, Ash carried his son to the bathroom to be with Josie. They hear the front door being smashed, it is going to be okay, paramedics have arrived. When the footsteps reach the bathroom Ash is surprised to find men entering wearing biohazard suits. The nightmare begins.Put in isolation, Ash soon finds out all of his neighbors have died and told by his captors his children have died as well. Unfortunately the virus is spreading unwanted to other communities; it was let loose on Ash's neighborhood with the intent to keep it contained and find someone immune to it so a vaccine could be developed. All that is left is to dissect Ash and produce a vaccine, except Ash has other plans, he wants to find out what happened to his children, and then he wants revenge. This conspiracy oriented novel will grip you from the first dozen pages as the reader is thrown right into the action. Not a literary great novel, but rather a very entertaining read that is difficult to put down once you have read the first chapter. The characters are believable, the plot plausible, and the story flows at an even pace with the action timed to keep the story moving along.I look forward to reading the sequel, "Exit 9" to see where Brett Battles takes the story line. This was a fast and entertaining read that can be finished in just a couple of days. The pace of action draws the reader in to keep reading. I recommend it for light reading, especially those who like apocalyptic themes. I give it 4 stars.

A Fantastic Thrill Ride From Start to Finish
Wow, it's been quite some time since I flew through a book the way I did with Sick by Brett Battles. So many of my reads lately have been difficult to get into, so much so, that I have actually given up on three, which is very unlike me. The thrill and joy I usually receive from reading just wasn't there with them, my mind constantly wanting to flip on the TV or go browse Facebook rather than continue with the books. It was sad. Nothing was working. I felt at a loss, my greatest pleasure in life being denied to me. But then I opened up Sick on my kindle, which I had downloaded during a free period a few days earlier, and found myself completely hooked. It begins with a simple cry in the night, one that wakes Daniel Ash and causes him to check on his daughter, his mind thinking this is nothing more than a simple nightmare and that coaxing her back to sleep won't take long. He is right in one respect; it is a nightmare, only this one takes place in the waking world rather than the sleeping one. His daughter is sick, something within her quickly destroying the body she occupies. And she isn't the only one. His wife is already dead, and the people in the houses surrounding his are all plagued with symptoms and succumbing at an alarming rate. Thankfully a team of military-like personal move in quickly and secure the area preventing a widespread contamination - only how did they get there so quickly after the first signs of trouble? Also, why are they keeping Daniel Ash in a prison-like setting after it becomes pretty clear he isn't sick and actually immune to the virus?Something isn't right . . .My reading of Sick couldn't have come at a better time, because, as I said above, I was growing more and more upset with the lack of excitement I was feeling with the books I had been reading. Sick, however, reminded me of what it is I love and why I prefer to sit down and read during my free time as opposed to turning on the TV or jumping online. It is a story that grabs you from page one and doesn't let up until the end, one that gives a wide variety of characters, many unknown to each other, who are all circulating around a central conflict that could, if not contained, spell the end of mankind. Even better, this tale, while able to stand on its own, is the beginning of a much larger body of work, one that promises to be an exciting journey. Battle lines have been drawn in the world within Sick and the skirmish fought between the two forces within this first installment of the Project Eden series is only the beginning.

Exciting thrilling rollercoaster ride.
Captain Daniel Ash wakes at the sound of his daughters cry. But when men in bio suits arrive; its not to help; its to eradicate a problem. His wife already dead and Daniel and his family and all his neighbors in the flats around him ill and taken by these men; this starts a fast paced emotive read based upon Daniel finding his children.Funnily enough I chose this book by cover alone, something I never do. But my instincts were right Wow what a fab read.I read this from cover to cover in 1 sitting as I couldn't put it down. Your propelled along by this exciting well written conspiracy thriller. The flu is spreading rapidly and people are dying and scared; we've read and seen books similar; but Brett has a unique twist on this plot which I wont spoil as its a great surprise.Daniel and his kids are lucky to be immune but finds themselves captured as lab rats; Ash is rescued and thrown into a new world to discover the truth but his main aim is to find and rescue his kids.Bretts managed to get a great balance of likable and extremely well developed characters and supporting sub plots which bring the whole book together. This compelling gripping read is beautifully written and descriptive enough so you can easily see whats happening at every chapter; making it an exciting rollorcoaster ride read. The brilliant chilling plot is believable and makes you think how possible it could be and frightening on many levels. A fantastic heart pounding thriller for everyone who loves their suspense reads.I was completely immersed for hours oblivious to my surroundings, I loved this read and have just bought book 2 Exit 9 as cant wait to continue to find out more.Watch this space!

Sick - In every sense of the word
I love a good horror. Whether Brett Battles was going for a horror or an urban thriller here, either way, he has nailed it. In fact, I would say he merged the two perfectly.Blistering from the outset, we are thrust into a nightmarish world of disease and death. Loved ones aren't safe, anyone is a potential victim and even the innocent are in danger before we can catch up with the plot. We follow our protagonist as he becomes embroiled in a conspiracy thriller that has a little of everything. In fact, by the halfway mark, its a surprise our hero hasn't given up. But he doesn't, using his personal demons to propel him to revenge and justice, which drives the plot perfectly. We also see the situation from interspersed characters as the severity of the situation becomes more and more out of control. The beauty of Sick is this: Realistic scenarios are the most terrifying. What if you woke up and your world had been changed by megalomaniac government individuals with annihilation on their mind? It doesn't seem that unrealistic when you think about it. Reading the papers, it seems almost inevitable that it could happen. Which is where Sick is strongest. Playing on fears that anyone who reads the newspapers will identify with, Sick makes for an excellent, heart-pounding thriller.I found it difficult to put this down. I have read Brett Battles for several years, since his very first Quinn thriller and after this experience, I will continue to read. I can't wait for the sequels. An excellent dystopian page turner.

Be prepared.
I really enjoyed this book, knowing the circumstances of the plot could happen. After waking up to find his wife dead, Ash stumbles into a mind-bogging plot by authorities. Cover-ups and deception surround him while learning of his children's demise after exposure to the same virus that wipes out his small town of army families. Confusion leads to Ash's determination to make those responsible for unleashing the virus pay for their actions. The subtle angling of each character's thoughts give the reader all they need in discovering how the flue-like symptoms effect different groups in the area, while they are cordoned off and the contaminated section expands. The way the virus spreads would send horror into any upright citizen's mind. Be prepared for fast-paced action.

A fantastic story
A very good story and not very far fetched at all. Anyone that pays attention to reality, like the writer clearly does, will notice that it is not that far away from what certain people are saying in public in a nice fluffy way with regards to population control. The writer tells a fast paced story with just enough scene setting information to build a picture in your mind.I am currently reading book 2 now.

What a read!
'Sick' is one of the best books I have read in years. At first, I was a little put off by the title, but having read the sample sent to my kindle, I was hooked and had to buy the book immediately. The story is amazingly put together using small scenarios that gradually fill out and come together to create the whole gruesome truth. I can't really say much about the plot without giving the story away, except to say that it is about an outbreak of a virus that threatens the world. As soon as I had finished this book, I simply had to buy the next in the trilogy and having read that, I can't wait to get started on the third book. A superb read.
