Hi lee, thank you for your question. Our Lights by Night LED Light Switch requires 3 AAA batteries (not included). If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to respond or give us a call between the hours of 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM Central Standard Time, Monday thru Friday at 1-800-654-8483. Thank you.

How long does the batteries last?

Not very long my child left it on and after about 24 hours the batteries were dead.

Could I use this as underglow for my car

It is very bright. I guess it would depend on how far away it is from you. It is much too bright for use as a bedroom night light.
