Is it worth it? Sewing Edition
This book is broken down into 5 sections.Bibliographical note- Exactly as it sounds, notes on where the information came from covered in about 6 pages.Introduction- My favorite part of the book, which explains concisely the fashion and notes their changes for the time period. I found this section really interesting and it is about 12 pagesList of plates- The list of plates section translates the french plates captions into english as closely as it can be done. Which states what is being worn, sometimes fabric and trims and what the person illustrated are doing are mentioned other times not.Glossary- A glossary of french terms explained in English that appear in italics in the book.Plates-The actual illustrations of the garments Upon my first read over, I was not impressed. But after fully reading and observing the illustrations, I find it an interesting book. The depictions clearly shows the fashion and because the author explained so well the changes, it's easy to tie it all together and identify the subtle changes over time.. Is this a must have book no but I do not regret the purchase. Is it worth it? For Moi!! Yes

Promenade with Marie Antoinette et al.
An amazing peek into the fashions of 1778-87! Any scholar of late 18th century pre-Revolutionary French life, and it goes without saying, clothing, as well as the historical re-enacting enthusiast, should do well to study the pages within this book. Alas, since Dover Publications has it out-of-print, it is a rare find (I did beg the company for a copy for years), but if by chance you find it at a used book store, grab it! It is well worth the investment. A treat for the eyes, makes history come to life, and encourages you to wonder... how did people wear those lovely headdresses?I should also say that this book is invaluable for crafting -- color copying the fashion plates are perfect for decoupage, or to simply frame a favorite single image, even make several into a pattern for any imaginable use. This book should go back into print! There is just as much interest today in these glorious fashions as there is the delectable Victorians of the late 19th century. I adore it.

Well worth getting
I tried for over a year to get a copy of this book when it was out-of -print. The same seller always kept advertising it as available, then telling me it wasn't. I was thrilled to find that a new printing has been issued & this isa what I finally got. The book is slim, but absolutely packed with fashion plates of one of the most over-the-top periods in fashion history. Well worth getting.

Get your rococo on
What a darling little book! The price is right and you get a feel for the period of The Gigantic Hat. The names of the hats and the interesting style of the dresses guides you away from the limited view most people have of this incredible fashion period. Worth the cost. While you can look at fashion plates at most major museum sites, this is a good start to creating dress. I would love to have had more fashion plates!

A helpful visual overview of late 18th century fashion
Stella Blum has selected plates of 18th century fashion from the Metropolitan Museum's collection and reproduced them here in full colour. You certinally don't get all the plates produced in the 18th century but what you get is a helpful and representitive selection. This is one of the few books where you can see actual colour plates all reproduced in a sequence like this.If you have any interest in 18th french fashion this book is both [inexpensive] and invaluable.

Great Fasion Prints
Full Color copies of prints from the period 1778-1787. Good reference for the costumer and could be fun when framed and added to a sewing room. There are 64 prints from the original "Galerie des Modes". As usual Dover does it very well.

Never received
About a month after I had ordered the book, I still had not received it. I contacted the company who offered it, but never receive a reply. I looked to see who else may have the book, and I saw that the company from whom I ordered it originally, still had the one book I had ordered in their stock, indicating that they never even attempted to send it to me. I emailed them to ask if they would send it if I reordered it, and I again did not receive a response. It seems that the big company that they advertise as being, is too big to pay attention to an order for one book. This company does not merit even one star, but the Amazon system won't send the email without a star acknowledgement.
