Number 7 in the series from COLLECTABLES, and as per usual, these ten tracks are all from the original masters from their respective original labels, spanning the decades.Track 1: " Tell It Like It Is "The great Aaron Neville. From 1966-1967 this hit a national # 2 ( PAR-LO # 101 )PAR-LO was owned by New Orleans school teacher Warren Parker, George Davis and musician Alvin " Red " Tyler.In 1960, Aaron was with New Orleans-based MINIT Records ( owned by Joe Banashak and Larry McKinley )He had a small hit with " Over You " ( # 612 ) from the same year, but returned to " digging ditches for a living "In addition, his early MINIT labels had mis-spelled his name as " Arron "Unfortunately, the PAR-LO / NOLA ( and DOVER Distributing ) went under just after his million seller.PAR-LO did manage to release their one and only LP as by Aaron Neville.In 1989, Aaron hit a Number 2 again, pairing with Linda Ronstadt for " Don't Know Much " ( ELEKTRA # 69261 )His brother is Art Neville of The Meters and Art, Charles and Cyril along with Arron perform as The Neville Brothers.Track 2: " Yummy Yummy Yummy "As By Ohio Express from 1968 came in at a Number 4 ( BUDDAH # 38 ) and sold a million+Originally known as The Rare Breed in 1967 for CAMEO Records ( # 483 ) and anothet million-seller for the group "Chewy Chewy " ( BUDDAH # 50 ) featured the voice of Joey Levine, also with 1910 Fruitgum Co and Reunion.Track 3: " Gimmie Little SignAs by Brenton Wood ( real name Alfred Smith ) His biggest hit of the three released in 1967 in at a national Number 9 ( DOUBLE SHOT # 116 )The hits were a long-time coming. He started recording in 1958 with Little Freddy & The Rockets as well as a group-member with The Dootones and Quotations.Track 4: " Soul Deep "As by The Box Tops from 1969 ( MALA # 12040 ) This one was their last chart entry of their seven Top 40 hits, including the million-sellers " The Letter " ( MALA # 565 ) and " Cry Like A Baby " ( MALA # 593 )The Box Tops were led by Alex Chilton, who was the genius behind the group Big Star.Alex passed away on 17-March-2010Track 5: " Girl Watcher "As by The Okaysions from 1968, a Number One million-seller.The boys were from Wilson, North Carolina and the record was first released on NORTH STATE ( # 1001 )The master was then sold to ABC Records ( # 11094 )Track 6: " Raindops "As by Dee Clark ( real name Delecta Clark ) One of the biggest charters from 1961 ( Number 2 ) and one of the biggest hits for VEE JAY Records ( # 383 ) It sold a million.Sadly, Dee Clark was one of the artists caught up in the bankruptcy of the label, and was still owed massive back royalties right up to his death on 7-December-1990.Track 7: " A Little Bit Of Soap "As by The Jarmels. From 1961, this reached Number 12 ( LAURIE # 3098 )The Jarmels were so-named for a street up in Harlem.This group was from Richmond, Virginia and there is a well-known story that tells of the group hitch-hiking to New York City for the session in a blinding snow-storm. Of note, the late Major Harris was a later Jarmels group-member and became a member of The Delphonics and a solo artist. Major Harris passed away on 9-November-2012.Major was a cousin of Norman Harris, multi-platinum composer and co-founder of MFSB. ( died 20-March-1987 )Track 8: " The Wayward Wind "As by Miss Gogi Grant ( real name Audrey Brown ) and her Number One million-seller from 1956 ( ERA # 1013 )A year earlier, she had hit the Top 10 with " Suddenly There's A Valley " also for Herb Newman's ERA label (# 1003 )She also did the vocals for the movie " The Helen Morgan Story "She later signed with RCA Victor Records. Gogi Grant passed away 10-March-2016Track 9: " Personality "As by Lloyd Price from 1959 one of his nine Top 40 hits for ABC PARAMOUNT Records ( # 10018 )As far back as 1952 Lloyd had his first million-seller " Lawdy Miss Clawdy " for Art Rupe's SPECIALTY label ( # 428 )After his military service Lloyd returned to the charts in 1957 with " Just Because " ( ABC PARAMOUNT # 9792 )Of course Lloyd Price is best-remembered for his Number One million-seller " Stagger Lee " also from 1959 ( ABCPARAMOUNT # 9972 )He and business partner Harold Logan had established their KRC imprint and leased their masters to ABC PARAMOUNT. Mister Prices also established the DOUBLE L * and TURNTABLE ( also the name of a club Lloyd co-owned )After Mister Logan 's death ( murder ) Lloyd Price hooked-up with boxing promoter Don King and established the LPG label.* The late great Wilson Pickett ( died 19-January-2006 ) recorded his first SOLO sides for DOUBLE L.Former valet for Mister Price and former SPECIALTY label-mate Larry Williams also had a hit with " Just Because "( SPECIALTY # 597 ) Larry Williams died on 7-January-1980.Track 10: " I Love You "As by The Volumes out of Detroit from 1962 hit Number 22 nationally on the small CHEX imprint ( # 1002 )CHEX was one of the labels owned by William " Tony " Ewing.This outing was their only chart entry despite the fact that the group recorded some great tracks for several small Detroit-based labels through-out the decade, usually led by lead-singer Ed Union.NOT FROM ANY LINER NOTES ( Of Which There Are None On This CD Anyway )
