Mortal Kombat Trilogy (PS1 Platinum)

Far better than I was expecting.
To be honest, I bought this game mostly expecting some cheap nostalgia and jank gameplay. I'm a big fan of Mortal Kombat from Deadly Alliance onwards and I never really spent a lot of time with the "Klassic" era of MK.What I got was a very nice surprise in that it's a game with a good amount of depth and character variety, matchups that always have to be considered and playable bosses that are great for a laugh in Versus mode. The selection of characters is also very generous. Cloning could be called on rare occasions however characters have varying attack speeds; dial-a-kombos and fall speeds that make you consider your offensive and defensive options from one character to it's "clone".Singleplayer tends to be tough on any difficulty without straight up exploits (which I won't give here) but still fun if quite frustrating. Make use of your time in singleplayer to learn how to adapt, how to defend, how to anti-air, how to pressure and how to convert stray hits into decent damage.Versus is where the game really shines thanks to the various mechanics in play (run cancels, dial-a-kombos, throws, special moves etc.) and becomes very intense very quickly as long as your opponent is aware of how to play correctly and how to face certain matchups.Overall, this is a deceptively deep and engaging (and of course extremely fun) game that I would recommend to anyone looking to revisit the roots of Mortal Kombat. Also it has to be said actually taunting another player as Shao Kahn never gets old.

Awesome!
Combining all of the characters from Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2, Mortal Kombat 3 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (as well as introducing some of the missing special moves from Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 such as Stryker's machine gun burst, etc). For my money, the MK series went seriously downhill when it went 3D and digital with Mortal Kombat 4 (one of the worst games ever) and continued to plummet perilously ever since with the games made available on the Playstation 2 console. The true appeal of this game was its realism - by using digitised video footage of real martial arts experts and centering the story in reality by concentrating on the human fighters from our world, Mortal Kombat creators Ed Boon and John Tobias anchored the whole concept in the most plausible way of all - with only brave but frail earth warriors fighting on Earth's behalf, players could readily identify with the character's destinies and find their imaginations being fed just enough to make it all seem as compelling as any book, movie or even comic book. And comic book is what MK is all about - Seriously, DC Comics - don't you know Nightwolf is basically your native American character Scalphunter??? Compare and contrast their respective warpaint! Also, Mileena is Elektra, the female villain and ex-love interest of Marvel Comics' blind crimefighting lawyer Daredevil as created by Lanky Frank Miller (OK, Milly's cozzie is purple but she's got the same weapons as Elektra so it's not totally passing off...). The Ninjas Skorpion, Sub Zero and Reptile aren't that far removed from the villains comic book writer and artist Frank Miller also introduced in Daredevil during his first run of the title and even Star Wars is referenced by Tobias & Boon with Kabal the not Tusken Raider and Boss character Shao Kahn's dialogue ("ALL TOO EASY!") but hey, if you're going to steal, as it were, then pinch from the very best, as they say. Finally, the increased pixel counts and more detailed costumes, ill thought out use of digital sprites and uninspiring offensive moves in the next Gen games killed the series for me. What was so wrong with the simple costumes of Sub Zero and the like? Skorpion's standing four hit high kick combo from UMK:3 is so simple to pull off that it just never gets old - nowt wrong with some good 'touch phone' gamepad bashing, is there? While Mortal Kombat is undoubtedly 'hamburger' compared to the high quality 'steak' of yer Tekken's, Soul Blades and Streetfighters, it endures because its of simplicity and big, big doses of humourous gore.Incidentally, at the Kharacter Selekt screen (it's those Ks again), Kano, Rayden, Kung Lao and Jax's original costumes can be chosen if you highlight them and press Select. You're also granted the privilege of performing these characters respective finishing moves, which is nice! Also, if you press and hold all four shoulder buttons whilst holding UP at the same time at the Options screen, the screen will shake and you'll be able to access the green question marked box which graces you with one button fatalities, instant Aggressor and the option to switch off the blood (and replace it with sweat!) as well as other fun things to enhance your MK playing pleasure...so:What're you waiting for then? Buy this game!!

MORTAL KOMBAT AT IT'S BEST! ! !
For ages iv'e been a big fan of the Mortal Kombat games and films and since i played this one it has been my favorite from the start. This has the biggest selection of characters out of any Mortal Kombat games (40 characters) and hundreds of special moves, combos, fatalities, brutalities, animalities and Babalities! As well as having a huge range of new, or new looking, characters this game also features 2 origonal characters from Mortal Kombat 1 (Kano and Rayden) wich all come wit all their old fatalities and special moves, it also features 2 characters (Jax and Kung Lao) from Mortal Kombat 2, again they come with their origonal fatalities and moves! The 2 features that are only on Mortal Kombat Trilogy are the Brutalities wich allow you to batter your opponent 'till they explode and the AGGRESSOR meter wich (when full) will make your fighter faster and more powerful! This game is a must buy game for the MK fan and will even be good for people who have never heard of Mortal Kombat before! This game mixes classic game-play, grusome gore effects and decent graphict to make the ultimate fighting game!So your probably woundering why i'm giving it 4 stars, this is because i don't think it is as good as the first MK, Everything about this game is better than the origonal MK but when you play the origonal you get a much better gaming experience, dont ask me why, you just do. So buy this game, but if your just into classic arcade gaming, buy MK1. (i have wrote a review for the plug'n'play version of the origonal MK, chek it out).
