A little difficult to write an honest review for 'the symphonies' by the maestro but I feel that most compositions are rendered differently by various orchestras or their illustrious conductors.I have heard - in fact I own Symphony # 6 on Cirrus Classics, Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Edouard van Lindenberg and Symphony # 5 on Chandos (CHAN 8351), Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mariss Jansons and can confirm that each conductor leaves his own "touch" to the great works. Even the same orchestra - in this case the Oslo Philharmonic, when recording on different occasions does have 'variations' which can be discerned when played one after other. Nothing objectionable, I hasten to add, since it is not physically possible to be "exact".These complete 'The Symphonies' I might say, have been rendered as perfectly as possible. A trained ear could probably discern "mistakes" but that only a professional could.Why only 4 stars then? Well, the packing of this set honestly has rather disappointed me. Instead of each CD being packed in its own jewel case, each of these are packed in cardboard slip-sheets, together packed in a card board outer box with a thin booklet detailing information on the symphonies and the Oslo Philharmonic.I would have thought that for the price charged we could have at least got the 6 CDs in separate jewel cases! Would have looked better in my collection that way!!Recording wise - wonderful set to own. Go ahead and buy it.

i disagree with some of the reviewers here - I have many copies of the Tchaikovsky symphonies and this is without doubt the reference-point set. 5 is exceptional, 3 splendid and Manfred and Little Russian also shine. for years these Tchaikovsky symphony recordings have justifiably topped The Penguin Guide's recommendations and still do. Issued here both remastered and at budget price this is the essential reference point for anyone that wants to enjoy Tchaikovsky's symphonies. One of the best items in the chandos catalogue - strongly recommended

I have long been an avid listener to Tchaikovsky, from the moment I heard the 1812 overture in my early twenties. This CD has introduced me to several pieces which I did not know and was very enjoyable. Great recording at a very reasonable price.

Contemporary mind and interpretation

For me, this purchase is testimony to the value of sincere reviews posted by Amazon customers! I owned performances of all of Tchaikovsky's symphonies prior to this purchase. The 4th on Naxos and the 6th by Dutroit and Montreal are good both in performance and sonics. The 5th on Telarc was for me uninspired. So... after listening sessions of what I had, I had a yearning for what I needed; a solid, dedicated, sincere performance and recording of these great works. After coming upon this box set on Amazon and seeing the high overall rating, I began to read the individual reviews intently. Most reviewers were saying the same thing (a very good indicator) that the performances were heartfelt with beautiful sound quality. I am an audiophile so the sound quality matters a great deal to me and the reviews indicated this set has excellent sonics. Yes indeed!! A well revealed soundstage with appropriate height, width and depth. Great sound means little if the performance is lacking. No problem there. Jansons and the Oslo Philharmonic must have really rehearsed and come to love this music as that comes through on all 6 discs. For the price, this is steal. I will listen to these works often, enjoying them each time. Great recordings in every way, and I do not say that often!

Lange gesucht und endlich gefunden: Eine schöne Einspielung und temperamentvoll eingespielt. Durchgehend gute Interpretationen und ein präzises Orchester. Der Preis: angemessen, um nicht zu sagen günstig. Rundum empfehlenswert .

Magnífica versión de la integral sinfónica tchaikovskyana. Jansons es dinamita pura en estas grabaciones, muy cerca de su maestro Mravinsky, pero aportando una claridad de planos y una estructura férrea de las que el director ruso a veces carecía en estas obras. Lirismo apasionado pero siempre bajo control. Si unimos la calidad técnica del mejor Chandos (aunque recordando siempre que las grabaciones tienen ya unos añitos), el resultado es una integral a colocar entre las más grandes.

Incisa tra il 1984 ed il 1996, questa integrale delle sei Sinfonie di Tchaikovsky con protagonisti Mariss Jansons e la Oslo Philharmonic si è da subito affermata presso tutta la critica internazionale come una pietra miliare dell'interpretazione moderna del lascito sinfonico del grande compositore russo. Come per l'integrale Emi delle Sinfonie di Shostakovich, anche in questo caso è evidente quanto il talentuoso Maestro lettone abbia nel sangue il linguaggio musicale russo: in gioventù, infatti, egli ebbe la fortuna di diventare assistente nientemeno che del "mitico" direttore della Filarmonica di Leningrado, ossia Evgeny Mravinsky, che ha lasciato al disco interpretazioni indimenticabili dei capolavori di Tchaikovsky, con particolare riferimento alle ultime tre Sinfonie e ad una spettacolare ripresa live del concerto per pianoforte n. 1 con Sviatoslav Richter (pubblicata dalla casa discografica Praga). Un'esperienza simile ha chiaramente contribuito a rendere particolarmente sensibile Mariss Jansons all'esperienza sinfonica di Tchaikovsky: benché molti possano (a torto) reputare la Filarmonica di Oslo un'orchestra non di prim'ordine, sarà opportuno rammentare che proprio Jansons ha contribuito a renderla oggi una delle compagini più importanti d'Europa. Per trovare una integrale sinfonica di Tchaikovsky accostabile a questa è infatti necessario andare a ritroso sino ai tempi d'oro di Karajan (anni Sessanta ma soprattutto Settanta), oppure ricorrere a quella più recente di Valery Gergiev (nelle prime tre con la London Symphony, nelle ultime tre nientemeno che coi Wiener Philharmoniker) , tuttavia nelle prime tre Sinfonie l'arte di Jansons si afferma oggi come un inarrivabile traguardo, con particolare riferimento alla meravigliosa atmosfera onirica e trasognata della Prima Sinfonia, nonché alla freschezza e allo slancio romantico della Seconda e soprattutto della Terza. Dirompente e superba è poi l'interpretazione delle ultime tre Sinfonie (cavalli di battaglia di tanti altri grandi direttori), che non temono il confronti con le incisioni storicamente di riferimento (da Mravinsky a Giulini, da Karajan a Bernstein): le ombre oscure dell'ultimo, amaro e triste periodo della vita di Tchiakovsky trovano qui una lettura profondissima e da manuale, certamente annoverabile tra le vette interpretative di Mariss Jansons.Accompagnano le sei Sinfonie il vorticoso e freschissimo "Capriccio Italien" ed una interpretazione magistrale della "Manfred" op. 58.La splendida impresa discografica è resa ancor più appetibile dalla meravigliosa ripresa sonora effettuata dalla britannica Chandos, che ha curato la limpida rimasterizzazione nel 2006; correda il box un curatissimo libretto che descrive in modo estremamente approfondito i sei capolavori sinfonici di Tchaikovsky. Imperdibile!

現在屈指の巨匠となったヤンソンス、若い時期の生き生きとした颯爽たるチャイコフスキーだ。のちにバイエルン放送響と後期3大交響曲を再録音しているが、このオスロフィル盤も実に魅力的だ。録音もリマスターのおかげで、きわめて良い。
