Christianity Through the Centuries

very good book
I believe it to be thorough in explaining the truth of history in such a way, that one can see why and even glean some understanding as to "'the how" so many denominations/ splits of denominations, and schools of thought in an agnostic way have come into being & given rise to so much false teaching and beliefs in our time. The manipulated lies of people in history for their own gain. The misguided truth of some who thought they were following God's Will, only to give rise to changes not taught in Scripture, and the disagreements/divisions between believers battling the political, social, religious, & economic problems of their day. reads like our modern day with much battle over false teaching that is crippling the true church & body of believers and is tarnishing our precious Savior Jesus & the gospel. We have much work to do my brothers and sisters to keep standing firm speaking truth in love against those who are false!! We must defend truth from error, heresy, and false teaching as we see it & hear it today in the church and in the culture as it was then. Every lay person should have this book in their library of study. very good and I still have much reading to go. I highly recomend this book to all who desire to learn about our Biblical history along with some world history of the centuries. thank you Paster Gilbert for telling me about this book. It has helped me so much to understand other groups of Christians & why they think and believe the way they do. Let us grace and love as Christ did. Classifying yourself with & in a denomination does not make you a Christian. Only faith in Christ alone does!! 2 Peter 3:10-18

A Survey of Church History: Brilliant and Accessible
In this book Dr. Cairns has skillfully crafted a brilliant and accessible survey of the history of the Christian Church from it's inception all the way up to the present day (latest ed. 1996). His writing is engaging, helpful, and honest.Obviously with a survey book, no one can include all the details of any significant person, event, or movement. But Dr. Cairns does a wonderful job (as any historian would do) of selecting which things to include and which things the reader can do without. The book is very well divided into 42 chapters from 11 sections in 3 major periods. The text alone is enough for the price of the book, both in content and lucidity; but there are also great pictures, maps, and charts along the way. While many don't understand the importance of knowing church history, if you are someone with the remotest interest in the subject (and even if you're not), I highly recommend this work. There is not one better survey I know of in this field. It will change and shape your understanding of your very roots as a Christian.

Church history remains important
Very few Christians today know any part of church history. They do not know of the doctrinal battles, the tribulations and victories that have marked the church age between the Ascension of Christ and the present. I wonder how many of today's pastors know any significant amount of church history apart from the odd biography here and there! For those that are interested in the history of the church, and if you are a Christian you should be, Cairns' Christianity Through the Centuries is an excellent book to whet your appetite for church history.I certainly recommend this book!

Great overview of Christian history
My only wishes are that the author spent more time in the 300-1000s, and also understood the differences between historic, Orthodox postmillenialism and liberal "postmillenialism."

The Early Christian Church Unveiled
This book was suggested to me by my university professor as additional reading for a course I was taking, Christianity and Culture, that covered the period of the early church through medieval times. This book provides very good detail of the growth of the church, who the key players were, and what impacted it not only theologically, but also politically, historically, socially, and economically. It does so by providing sufficient detail of the subject matter, written in clear and concise language which even a layperson can comprehend. I highly recommend it as a timeless resource in your study of Christianity.

I mostly dislike history. However
Become knowledgeable about the past. I'm not a history buff. In fact, I mostly dislike history. However, this book is probably the first history book I've ever picked up and enjoyed reading and learning. Their is a plethora of information so it is impossible to remember everything. But, this book is a must read for the intellectual.

Wonderful Book
I am very pleased with this book, Christianity Through the Centuries. I've been looking for a single bookthat would cover all the stages of the Christian Church since the time of Christ, this seems to fit my need.I have not completed this book, as I am reading it slowly with other books, but so far it is fulfilling the need I had for a book on the Christian church.

Well written balanced analysis
This was a text for a history course and while it might seem large it was very well written and easy to read. The details were enough to cover any thoughts without going down rabbit trails.

A must-read if you are a Bible student.
I got a good one. Off-white print. Big enough to read. Hard binding as we see in libraries.

Detailed
I've read church history books that give you the jist and no more, but Cairns goes into lots of detail so you can really get your head around the subject! clearly laid out and plenty of room in the margins for notes.
