Great Detail Crewel Embroidery Book.
I like this book as it has the pattern drawing and a completed full color photo of the work. It includes a list of the colors in Appleton crewel wool, and a methodology of working the areas. It has the basic stitches used and how to get started working from simplier patterns to more complex. Well done.

Oh My What A Nice Book!
I was scared to order this as many reviews said it was totally for beginners. I've done various types of needlework for 50 years. Though I will say it has been a while since I did any crewel work but in all, I have branched out and started straying from the kits a bit. I wanted some inspiration to do my own designs on whatever I wanted to do them on, more than just an edging design on a tablecloth, or small flowers and nice use of floss on an applique project. I'll still keep to the kits (I've got enough to last me haha). However, this opens the door for so much more! She gives templates and of course color photos of the templates as a finished project mostly floral but some nice small critter designs. Just what I was looking for; some Jacobean-like style floral designs to do on small totes, denim jackets, even dress up a duffel bag, etc. This will also help branch out my wool applique designs by giving them a touch of fill-in work with floss. Just what I wanted. I just got the book yesterday and looked at it a bit this morning and very happy with my purchase. It's hard to mail ordering books, you really never know what you are going to get unless you have seen the book before. For me, ordering a used book is about the same price as driving to the library.PLEASE always review your books, it sure helps others! It was a huge bonus that this book had an excellent picture of a color wheel made with yarn and a really great explanation on how to use the color wheel; the way from primary to tertiary colors! Maybe I'll make something like it, color is my biggest hurdle when it comes to design work... I was a B&W photographer for years. I have composition down but color? No clue. This book had a really basic but very good approach to explaining the use of color. She'd be good to elaborate on color even more in a book just about the use of color in needlework. Anyway, it is indeed a good book for a beginner, but also for those experienced in various needlework kits and want to branch out and try some design work on your own! It will teach you that for sure. Thanks to the author, it's a very nice book.

Excellent Resource to Learn Crewel!
This is an outstanding book on crewel embroidery, particularly for someone who is a beginner or novice stitcher and interested in learning crewel work or improving their skills. The author is clearly an expert in the field and an experienced teacher. The text opens with accurate and helpful introductory information including history, materials, tools, design transfer, methods for framing up to work the embroidery and color principles. Then the author presents a series of 11 projects, progressing from simplest to most complex. Design 10 is a Tree of Life and Design 11 is the scroll design portrayed on the cover of the book. Clear directions and traceable images are provided for each project. The book also includes a variety of other traceable motifs for the embroiderer to use in designing their own projects. A Stitch Glossary is included in the back showing clear diagrams of how to perform each stitch used in the book. While there are other stitch dictionaries available that include many more stitches usable in crewel embroidery, the value of this book is as a step-by-step teaching tool for the beginning to intermediate student of crewel work. I strongly recommend this book - it is beautiful, inspirational, and incredibly well done.

Love this!
Has a lot of projects & templates to help you design your own projects. Plenty of stitches & variations too. More than worth price. Highly recommend for both beginners and intermediate stitchers.

If you want to learn or experiment with crewel embroidery, this is the book!
Love love love this book! I have been working on crewel embroidery for several months now and have found this to be the best book of all I have purchased. I have worked all of the designs in the book experimenting with different embroidery fabrics, threads and colors. If you are interested in learning crewel embroidery this is the book to start with!

A Very Basic Introduction
This is a very basic book, as are most of the projects. If you have never done embroidery of any kind, this book provides step-by-step instructions. However, if you have any experience at all, you may find it too simplistic. While I did find the discussion of scroll designs useful, the four pages of circles were less so. I would have much preferred to see more examples of actual embroidery in progress. Recommended if you are seeking a very basic introduction, but likely not worth your while if you have done any surface embroidery before.
