Yasmin the Teacher

lovely empowering stories
At last a "minority" character in a secular setting. Lovely text and illustrations. The stories are simple with a climax ... I like the Pakistani terms here and there . They are few enough to not obstruct the flow of the story, but nice to show my kids that there are different cultures/ways/languages to say things. I bought the whole collection. Both my 5 twins, boy and girl, loved them.

Great Illustrations!
Every week I purchase one of the books from this series and send it to my friend to share with her young daughter. They enjoy the books and look for them to arrive! Great books. Great stories that are fun and age appropriate!

enjoyable installment of the series
In this story, we get to briefly meet another member of Yasmin's family, her Aunt Zara; I appreciate how Aunt Zara is drawn so differently from Mama. This series is working to make sure that each character is seen as an individual. Then Yasmin has to problem-solve how to keep her classmates in order and (by being generous with Aunt Zara's gift) is able to bribe them into behaving themselves. Also it is established that Yasmin is good at math! I liked seeing her friend Ali dancing on the reading mat, too. (Even though he was really supposed to be doing his math worksheet - sorry, Teacher Yasmin.)I had a little trouble with suspension-of-disbelief about the teacher leaving such a young-seeming child in charge of the unruly classroom for so long - but my child appears absolutely delighted by this element.

irresponsible teacher and misdirected moral
First, note this is just 1 of the stories combined in Yasmin In Charge, https://www.amazon.com/dp/151584272X/ which is sold for a cheaper price than any of the 4 stories bought individually. It’s an inexplicably confusing setup from the publisher.Anyhow, I generally like the concept of the Yasmin books, and the information about her culture and pluralistic message, but there are some head-scratcher plot decisions from the author. In this particular story, the teacher decides to leave an arbitrary student (Yasmin) in sole charge of an out of control class. Then Yasmin gets the the class to fall into line by bribing every student. When the teacher gets back, Yasmin is praised for her effectiveness. This is an implausibly irresponsible premise, with a misguided solution advocated (in study after study bribing kids for good behavior causes significant long-term harm). It would be one thing to have an obviously zany fantastical book, but this is at least ostensibly supposed to represent a real girl in a real situation.Overall I’d advise the author to run all of the Yasmin plot ideas by someone trustworthy before writing the stories. Out of the 8 Yasmin stories published so far, 3 or 4 of them are ill-considered.
